msolga, I have one of those doohickies, and I wouldn't be without it. You never have to get dressed to go for a cup of coffee or tea, as long as you have this hot water boiler with you! Wonderful invention!

Yes, great for breakfast when one is too zonked to rush off to find the nearest cafe.
deleted repeat post .. (what is it tonight?
Why does this keep happening?
)
I just bring the basics.
Like others have said, I like to get very immersed in the country/culture that I'm visiting. As far as books are concerned, I bring one or two guide books and the latest volume of poetry that I'm reading. Other than that I read local newspapers (if they are in English or Spanish.)
I travel strictly 'carry-on' and never worry about getting separated from my luggage.
PS
If I could find some I'd bring vegemite...
...for a doorstop.
I can relate to the kitchen and pets thingy....if it had to be only one thing, I would go with a universal translator....

When I saw your name I thought: Aha, he'll bring some poetry!
Yep!
Don't forget condoms - searching for a pharmacy in some of them countries can kill all the desire

Seriously though, if I have my phone, and my credit card and my passport - I can just take off without the need to pack anything. 100 + trips in 5 years does that to you I guess

Well msolga that proves it......yer cute AND smart!
Thaks to everyone who posted here. I don't have time to respond to everyone right now, but enjoyed reading your replies.
I'm working this month in Washington DC, so I'm not in a foreign country (although sometimes it feels like it) and am close enough to home for a weekly visit from my husband. He brought me a few things such as my pillow, tea pot, puzzles and snacks.
What I miss most (other than my family and dog) is a real computer with unlimted access time, books (I brought a few but don't have much time to read) and my favorite reclining chair. Only 2 more weeks to go and I will be back home, at least for a while.
I was gonna say fudge, but that doesn't sound right...........
