Colgne Lights 2006

29 July 2006 The last Saturday of July, every year, Cologne puts on an incredible fireworks display above the Rhine River. The Cologne Cathedral is even more brilliant than usual and buildings along the river are also dramatically lit. The event begins with a parade of ships down the Rhine, each shooting off rockets. As darkness falls, onlookers hold candles that are distributed in restaurants, bars and hotels and the fantastic fireworks display is synchronized to music broadcast across the city.

More then 1,000,000 spectators along the river banks and on the bridges, 15,000 on 50 ships, millions before their tv's (live coverage over 5 hours), including Walter with camera

The ships have ended their parade (with some smaller fireworks in the suburbs to be seen), are turning around now and in ten minutes the big event starts: 30 minutes of firework to synchronosized music.

To give you an idea, one photo, taken about 70 minutes ago, the other half an hour .... more to come tomorrow:

Nice pictures. Wandel will enjoy them too, since he's from Cologne.

The rest is still on the chip - will come later today.

They do it for the 6th time now, I think - this year, it was the largest fireworks on a riverside in Europe .... and the longest syncronised to music worldwide (possibly).

Again, all photos are taken from the tv (from a live broadcast by "WDR" [Westdeutscher Rundfunk - West German Radio]).
So please excuse the rather bad quality!

The ship's parade started in one of the most southern suburbs of Cologne, in Cologne-Porz ...

... and the ships moved on towards Cologne (up to Cologne-Mühlheim, where they later turned back to Cologne-City)

Some pics now from the ship parade, before reaching Cologne city and the cathedral ... where people were waiting on stands, bridges and river banks for the ships to arrive

Thanks, Imur

Well, I don't know if someone ever photographed fireworks in nature: mostly, you just and only get the "after effect".
That's even worse, when doing so via a tv Laughing

So here just a couple to give you an idea of those 5 tons of fireworks shot during 30 minutes synchrone to really nice music ...
