DOHA, Qatar (CNN) -- With a poster of the burning World Trade Center behind him, Osama bin Laden's top lieutenant appeared on tape Thursday calling on Muslims to join the fight against Israel and "rise up seeking martyrdom and attack the crusaders and Zionists."

The video of Ayman al-Zawahiri aired on Al-Jazeera.

He likened the battles in Lebanon and Gaza to al Qaeda's battle against the West and called on Muslims to wage "jihad in the name of God." He did not specifically mention Hezbollah, which is battling Israel in southern Lebanon, or Hamas, which is embroiled in fighting in Gaza.

"The al Qaeda organization will not stay silent regarding what the Muslims in Palestine and Lebanon are facing," al-Zawahiri said.

Hezbollah and al Qaeda have long been wary of one another. But on the tape al-Zawahiri tells the Muslims in Lebanon and Palestinian territories, "Stand with us and we will stand with you."

Nowhere is safe from al Qaeda attacks, he warned, saying that "the whole world is an open field for us."

"As they attack us everywhere, we will attack them everywhere. They gang up to wage war on us; our (Islamic) nation will fight them and wage war on them," al-Zawahiri said.

He said that the Israeli rockets that "are tearing up Muslims' bodies in Gaza and Lebanon" are paid for by the "crusader's alliance," referring to U.S. support for Israel.

He added, "Everyone who participated in this crime must pay the price, and we will not stand by watching these explosives pouring down on our brothers in Gaza and Lebanon while we stand in silence and do nothing."

Hamas and Hezbollah became targets of Israel after the groups' guerillas captured Israeli soldiers in separate cross-border raids. Israeli airstrikes and artillery have been hammering Gaza and Lebanon in what Israel says is an attempt to retrieve its soldiers and neutralize both group's militants.

In Thursday's tape, Al-Zawahiri questioned whether the punishment fit the crime.

"The dangerous events going on in Gaza and Lebanon are proof to any sane person that the crusader-Zionist war is targeting us. No one budged for 10,000 prisoners in Israeli jails. However, the whole world went up in arms for three Israeli prisoners," he said.

Al-Zawahiri further called for "jihad to liberate Palestine, all of Palestine, and liberate all the lands that used to be Muslim from Spain to Iraq."

Alongside the World Trade Center poster were three other images: one of Mohammed Atef, also known as Abu Hafs al-Masri, who was killed in 2001 during a U.S. missile strike in Afghanistan; one of 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta wearing a beard; and one that couldn't be fully seen because al-Zawahiri was standing in front of it.

The new videotape is a rallying cry designed to lure recruits and generate controversy, according to U.S. intelligence officials, one of whom said al-Zawahiri was seizing a "target of opportunity" by lambasting the conflicts in the Middle East at a time when many in the region question U.S. support for Israel.

Al-Zawahiri also released a video last month after the death of al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

....and one from FoxNews.

This is getting interesting.
I would have thought that Israel watched a bit of the US led invasion of Iraq over the last 3 years.

Hezballah and al qaeda are hardly friends. Zarqawi called them an "enemy of Sunnis".

Well, I didn't make this up.
Friends or not, AQ is, at minimum, using the current Israeli conflict as a catalyst to "legitimize" and continue their struggle against the west.

Yeah. Right. "Al Qaeda"
Okay, let's take a look.

2001 - Afghanistan invaded.
Reaction from the Taliban - attempt to repel invaders.
Reaction from "al Qaeda" - none.

2003 - Iraq invaded.
Reaction from Iraqi regime - try to repel invaders.
Reaction from "al Qaeda" - bomb the **** out of Iraq following the invasion.

2006 - Israel starts attacks on Palestinians on 25 June and starts attacks on Lebanon on 13 July.
Reaction from Palestinians and Hezbollah - try to repel invaders.
Reaction from "al Qaeda" - none.

Let's take a look at the supposed setup of "al Qaeda's sleeper cells": "The way these folks work, they can go the logistics planning, to get the equipment they need and do the surveillance. Al Qaeda-trained people do a tremendous amount of surveillance to find the right targets, the right time of day or whatever. But then, you can put all those plans and equipment on the shelf, and then with one phone call, in as little as 24 hours, execute those plans."

Can you possibly tell me that these sleeper cells do not react to world events?

It has taken over a month for "al Qaeda" to do anything about Israel's offensives, and then all they've done is release a video. Have they lost all of the phone numbers of their "sleeper cells"?

"al Qaeda" is bullshit.

Its actions (or lack of) on behalf of its "Muslim brothers" proves it.

The only time it makes an appearance is when it is convenient for Western politicians.

If something goes "bang" in the near future it will do nothing but distract the media from Israel's actions, and it would probably justify the invasions of Syria and Iran.

Just to add. From some recent reading, I have learned that "Al-Qaida" is nothing more than a computer file containing the information of thousands of mujahadeen who were recruited and trained by the CIA to fight the Soviet Union in Afganistan.

Its translation "the database".

This I got out of the guardian article.

To go back to the point about the Balkans. If this "Al-Qaeda" wanted to defend Muslims so badly, why didn't the thousands of these mujahedeen go and join the fighting with those pathetic Palestinian gunmen? Instead they go to the Balkans and essentially support Washingtons interests there while committing some of the most outrageously sadistic atrocities against villagers.

Once again, "al Qaeda's" actions would do nothing but benefit Western politicians.

"In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way." - Franklin D. Roosevelt

[Edit] b.t.w here's the real Al-Qaeda

candidone, ", AQ is, at minimum, using the current Israeli conflict as a catalyst to "legitimize" and continue their struggle against the west." I think that's very true.
