I discovered there is a town in the USA called Arcadia. It is in California. Anyone from the nearby area? Someone who knows why it was named like that? Probably some early inhabitants of the town were Arcadians? Are they other towns with the same name?

I can't tell you anything about California, a state i have never visited, and a lapsus which i intend never to remedy.

However, as to the frequency of the name Arcadia in American towns, see this search page at the U.S. Census Bureau's Gazeteer. (There are a lot of them.)

By the way, there are quite a few Greek communities in North America. Greeks are to be found just about anywhere in Canada and the United States. Danforth Avenue in Toronto is often referred to as "Greek Town," and in the Greek Town area, the street signs are in Greek as well as English. You might find this page on "the Taste of the Danforth interesting, it tells about the annual festival held in Greek Town.

I also long lived in Columbus, Ohio, which has a large Greek community. You can read about their Greek Festival here. While i was living there, they built a cathedral to replace the small Greek Orthodox Church which they had used for more than a century. The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings in the midwest.

It looks like the Greek-American youth use to dress like Evzones (19th century Greek soldiers) more than we do Very Happy.

It is really remarkable that they keep many traditions after so many generations and so far from the homeland.

I knew about the Greek communities in New York, California, Chicago and Florida but not about the one in Ohio. It looks like they are a lot of well organised Greek communities we Greeks of Greece don't have a clue about, it is a shame that we abandoned them like this. Even so they keep their identity strong. Thanks for the links.

You're welcome, Boss--there is another large Greek community in Dayton, Ohio; i suspect there are a fair number of Greeks in Cleveland as well. As for Greek Town on the Danfort in Toronto, i love it for the many fine restaurants. In Columbus, there are many Greek restaurant owners, but no restaurants serving Greek food--you have to go to the Greek festival for that.

from kingston web directory :
"...Father Theologos Drakos of Kingston's Greek Orthodox Church shares his upbringing within a Greek family in Canada. His father before him was also an Orthodox priest.

Theo talks about Greek Orthodox practice and ritual, and reflects on the relation between religion and ethnicity.

The website for the Greek Orthodox Church of Kingston is http://www.koimisis.com "

Thanks to hamburger too. I see how important Orthodoxy is as a "linchpin" between the diaspora Greeks. Too bad that our pathetic goverment wants to detach the Orthodox church from the state, bringing "multiculturalism" as an excuse Confused .

The links were interesting.
