'Serious but stable'
Roethlisberger undergoes seven hours of surgery

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Ben Roethlisberger underwent seven hours of surgery after breaking his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash and was in serious but stable condition.

The Pittsburgh Steelers standout, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, was taken to Pittsburgh's Mercy Hospital on Monday morning after the crash.

It was not immediately known whether the accident would affect Roethlisberger's chances of playing this season.

Dr. Harry W. Sell, chairman of the hospital's surgery department, told reporters that four doctors operated on Roethlisberger for multiple facial fractures and that "all of the fractures were successfully repaired."

Doctors are unaware of any other serious injuries, but said Roethlisberger remained in serious but stable condition late Monday night, according to Dr. Daniel Pituch, who led the team of doctors caring for the star player.

"His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury and there are no other confirmed injuries at this time," he said.

Yup. If he was wearing a full-face helmet, he may have been able to walk away from that crash.

His head was inches from hitting the pillar on that car...it would have been much worse if he hit that instead of the glass.

Definitely not too bright. Let's see if he chooses to ride without a helmet after that.

There's a new article saying he may not have a m/c license, either. For anyone familar with the different bikes out there, the Suzuki Hayabusa he was riding is one of the absolute worst bikes for an inexperienced rider. 1300cc, top speed 190mph. Hell, I've had 3 different sportbikes and still wouldn't buy one of those. Even though I don't think the bike made a difference in this crash...60 year old woman pulled a turn in front of him.

I hope he enjoys the "freedom" of riding helmetless while he recovers in the hospital.

Okay, that was mean. I'm sorry the guy got hurt. But really, it's a special kind of stupid when you do such things, and Steeler management has got to be PO'd beyond belief. If Ben grows some brains while he's in the hospital, he might want to record a few PSAs -- particularly while he's still banged up and looking awful -- telling people to never, ever ride without a helmet.

obviously, repealing the motorcycle helmet law in pennsylvania was the right thing to do; he wasn't wearing one, and he didn't die or even become permanently disabled. Rolling Eyes

Terry Bradshwa was always accused of being stupid. Hed say, well "how smart do you have to be to be a quarterback in professional foobal ?l"

I guess we have the answer to that question.

Look at Gary Busey before he died, he became super- goofy after his motorcycle accident.

Even in states where helmets are required, a lot of people wear non-DOT approved "brain buckets," that wouldn't do anything in an accident anyway. Mostly guys on Harleys wear them, including a good friend of mine. He says, "if I crash I'm screwed anyway." Also, a lot of these boneheads try to say that helmets are more dangerous, and the added weight causes neck injury.

Really, if you open up one of those Suzukis, all a helmet will do is aid the forensics guys to identify you. Im amazed at how that bike just pretzeled up. Is that a feature that Suzuki wants to keep quiet? izzat damn thing made of the same **** we ask spendius to wear as a hat?

Doesn't matter much what happens to the bike, you're getting thrown off it anyway. Doesn't take much to twist a bike up like that anyway...and you'd be surprised, a bike can damage a car pretty good too. Most sportbike frames are made of aluminum, by the way.

Osso, the crash was caused by a 62 year old woman. She made a left turn across his lane in front of him at an intersection. She blamed it on him, saying "he wasn't looking." Oh, so you SAW him coming, and pulled in front of him anyway?

That exact type of crash is the #1 type of fatal accident with motorcycles. It's harder for the car driver to gauge the distance/speed of an oncoming motorcycle due to the slimmer size, or sometimes people claim they don't see the motorcycle.

I read an article talking about how it's hard to judge an oncoming object's speed & distance largely due to the background being "fixed" against the object. I think this makes a lot of sense, and sometimes I'll swerve back and forth a little on the bike when cars are waiting to make their left turn across my lane hoping I'm more noticeable, and it changes the background from their view also(if that makes sense).

Well, that gives me an idea about bike frames. Al is not a metal Id choose if I were trying to achieve a more rigid frame. Id think TitAnium. (Cooler look too with a Ti Hydride multicolored frame, itd be like a damascus steel with iridescnece. )

Even if Ben is gonna be ok, hes not going to be an item in this years fooball run. The body, when repairing itself, draws on reserves that will probably take a year or more to rectify. I understand that the Steelers had a clause about his Bike obsession but pussied out for fear they wouldnt be able to close the deal.

Whenever I was riding, I ALWAYS kept a single thought (no comments about my brain's capacity to do more than that please!). "I am invisible".

It is possible to ride a motorcycle safely.
a-Ride within your ability-not a problem if you ride to the road rules.
b-Always assume that you can't be seen. I alway's considered car drivers to be f**kwits on four wheels, and it saved my skin on a number of occasions.

'Fortunate to be alive'
Roethlisberger released, promises to wear helmet

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Ben Roethlisberger apologized to the Pittsburgh Steelers, fans and his family on Thursday, hours after being released from a hospital, saying he was fortunate to be alive and pledging to wear a helmet if he ever again rides a motorcycle.

"In the past few days, I've gained a new perspective on life," the Super Bowl-winning quarterback said in a statement released by the team. "By the grace of God, I'm fortunate to be alive ... "

Roethlisberger, 24, who wrecked his bike and cracked his head on a car windshield on Monday, was discharged late Wednesday night.

The youngest quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl was not wearing a helmet when he crashed into a car that was turning left in front of his motorcycle. Pennsylvania's mandatory helmet law was repealed in 2003.

But Roethlisberger said in the statement that if he ever rides a motorcycle again "it certainly will be with a helmet."
