Follow these four keys to child raising
Commentary

Tom Schaefer Knight Ridder

With Mother's Day celebrations planned for Sunday, I decided to get an early start by expressing my gratitude to the women in my life who are mothers: my own mother, my mother-in-law, my wife, my sisters, my sister-in-law, just to name an immediate few.

Thank you, and may God continue to bless you.

Each has had the wonderful experience of raising children -- with the attendant joys, sadnesses and disappointments that come with parenting.

So, what does it take to raise decent, loving children? If I may be so bold, I'll suggest four qualities I think are crucial. Let me know of others you'd add to the list:

I'd argue with "spiritual foundation", since I was raised by a coupla heathens and think I turned out OK. Very Happy

Some good stuff, there, though.

I think there is one step to raising kids: keep your spiritual foundation to yourself and don't try to use it on helpless children.

I'm with Sozobe. I agree with everything except the spiritual foundation thing. There are so many ways to teach your child morals, respect, love, kindness, etc... without bringing god into it. Children will benefit far more in life if they are taught all these things on the basis of simply feeling good about themselves instead of putting the god pressure on them.
