No, I just posted that pic to see if anyone would notice the morel popping up out of the ground.

Yes, I've been enjoying the time in the woods (and fields, and orchards, and...).

Hey, cjhsa!

OK, first, put all of your guns down.

And crossbows!

There.

OK.

So I was weeding in my (rather woodsy) yard today, and guess what I found?

Shocked

I'm 99% sure, have no film, will buy some tomorrow and take a pic.

My thought process -- "hey, is that a... omigod I think it is a... oh man, cjhsa is so gonna kill me..." Laughing

I hope you had the sense, Soz, to leave them alone. If you confirm that they are indeed morels, give them some time to get well established, and never take all of them to eat.

Looking forward to pics!

I went out again this weekend, this time along the lake shore (the really big lake), and found nothing. Not a single mushroom of any kind other than the ones growing out of logs, that live for years.

I left it alone, yep. Just the one that I've found so far. That one I almost put my yard bag on. I haven't purposely looked for any more yet; hope I didn't step on any yesterday.

If I want to encourage them, any advice? Just plain leave the one I found? (But it looks so yummy...! Laughing)

Will be getting film this afternoon.

With a bit of rain and the warm weather we had these last days, the morels are poping out. Today I got five of them:

OK, we went north about two hours to an area we've hunted morels in for years. My son and I found about 100 smallish morels, all blacks. Talk about a lot of work, but there was payoff!

I'll post pics once I get them transferred off my camera.

mmm, well um, me too. Maybe now youll get on with some valuable contribution to our way of life, instead of running around questing for ugly mushrooms.

Fifty some black morels and one toxic verpa thrown in to test you.

So, cjhsa (do you know I call you shiksa in m'mind?), what are you going to do with those treasures? Recipes, or if not recipes, ideas?

I always enjoy new recipes.

We coat them in egg wash, roll in seasoned Club crackers, and fry them in butter, or, saute them in butter and use the flavored butter as a roux base for cream sauce, to serve over pasta and/or meat. What we can't use immediately we dry.

Here's my little maybe-morel from my backyard:

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d130/sozobe/morel.jpg

It was much plumper and lighter when first sighted (took a pic a couple of days later).

Is it actually a morel?

(The paper says "Hey cjhsa! :-) -Soz")

That looks like a verpa, check to see if the cap actually attaches to the stem. The stem should also end at bottom of the cap. If the stem goes all the way to the top of the cap, don't eat it. It's drying out, and when dried, it's harder to tell verpa from morels, so be careful.

I'd also look around for more. Rarely do you get just one.

Thanks for thinking of me Soz! Smile
