We dont get morells here, not wild any way. Hawks wings yep but no morrells.
I West Aust there is a truffle farm though.
Are Hawks Wings edible? What do they look like?
Morel findings all over Michigan but not where I'm looking.
cj I suggest you get yopur self a good book with full colour pictures about mushroom Identification, or find someone who is willing to teach you.
Hawks wing mushrooms are your standard mushroom shape but the outside of the cap peels in brown slabs. white gills.
BUT DONT PICK ONE BECAUSE YOU RECOGNISE IT FROM MY DESCRIPTION.[/u]
The Audubon field guide series has a wonderful manual on mushrooms and fungi of North America (dont know if there are equivalents around the world). The usual rule is dont eat any mushroom with white gills, there are some deadly species that look like the few edible one. I looked up "HAwks Wings", couldnt find it .Is this a local name?
Must be a local name FM. I couldnt find it either. I agree with the white gills but not always. Living proof here.
we have lots of imported type mushrooms here that were imported on rootstock and growth promotors for Radiata pine plantations and also on all the non indigenouse tree species early settlers brought in.
And contary to what I said before apparently we do have wild morells. I need to research more to find out if they are 1. edible 2. Native.
If one cultivates a small, select circle of conservative Republicans, it becomes possible to safely identify which mushrooms in one's immediate environment are actually poisonous . . .
we have several species of morels, and a few of the "false morels" or "brain mushrooms". Most all the false morels are poisonous to DEADLY. Theonly false morel that is edible is the "Snowbank False Morel" which is native to the Rockies.
Most, but not all, false morels bear fruiting bodies in the fall, and te true morels are springtime thingies.
Morels should never be eaten raw, because of the remnant toxins that can cause stomach distress and make one blow chunks. Also, the book says that oe should not eat morels with booze. This can induce cardiac arrest by some means. (They didnt list the pharma references on that little hint).
The saltine coated and fried, or plain sauteeed in butter with a few onion slices are still the best ways I know. The morel is best enjoyed with a hunk a beef.

Amen, Brother, Testify ! ! !
dadpad, I'm quite capable of identifying morels. Thanks for your concern.
I figured "hawks wings" was probably a regional name.
I have a friend who is the president of the mycological society of Sonoma County. I defer to him any questions I have on identification.
Iv just been seaching the web for mushroom type info.I got around to "fungi Down Under" I couldnt help thinking Thrush.
