On a day when:
* The Secretary of State testifies before the Senate about a historic and controversial India nuclear pact deal;
* Oil prices jump;
* Iran reportedly continues to test fires missles in a show of defensive strength; and
* Iraq is struggling in what Reuters calls a "deteriorating security environment"...
... the president decides that the main pressing topic to discuss with Connecticut residents is ... drum roll ...
Bush Touts Health Savings Accounts
BRIDGEPORT, Conn., April 5, 2006
CBS/AP -- President Bush, speaking in a state where the GOP faces two tough midterm races, rallied support on Wednesday for expanding health savings accounts -- an idea that congressional Republicans rebuffed last month.
Mind you, this was not a free-for-all public meeting about the deplorable state of our health care delivery system and a brainstorming smorgasbord of possible solutions - a discussion I think we all would welcome. No, he chose to push his narrow, no-fix, not overwhelmingly popular HSA "solution" in a period when the Bureau of Economic Affairs has declared that America has a negative personal savings rate.
His own party is in disarray over his proposed immigration bill and he did take time today to urge Congressional leaders to break the stalemate, but when he had a chance to talk to "real Americans," he decided not to make a case for the legislation that he personally chose to push to a boil on the front burner.
Bizarre. Bizarre choice of topic today, given that it's wonkish and undramatic and not promising in terms of changing the subject, and bizarre display of "not getting" the paycheck-to-paycheck life of most Americans, who can only point at the notion of health savings accounts, hold their bellies and laugh.
