If your company has a policy of not hiring women in their childbearing years then you shouldn't. Otherwise you should. That is, you should if you take part in a company sponsored health plan.

The same with chronic illness, like diabeties.

The same with older people.

So, unless I'm missing some big and essential point, you would pay for that stuff under this law because your company is not allowed to discriminate against people in these categories.

I have no problem with a company getting a policy and everyone getting the same coverage and everyone paying the same premiums for it. But if I'm self-employed I wouldn't be in that category and If I'm self-employed in CA I have to buy a policy (under state law) that forces me to be covered for things that aren't even biologically possible. If I'm a plumber and run my own business and have 2 other unmarried male plumbers that work for me why should we all be forced to have coverage for things that aren't biologically possible?

Under the existing laws I'd have no choice in the matter. Who wins in that except for the insurance companies? They sell me a policy knowing full well that there is absolutely no way I can ever file a claim for half of the items covered and the state allows them to keep raising rates

Small Businesses and the self-employed should have, IMO, the option of picking coverage that meets the needs of their employees without being forced to buy over-priced policies. Ideally, I'd love to see a policy that allows for each employee to pick their coverages ala-carte style.
because they keep adding coverage for more and more possibilities.

Yeah, yeah, I get it.

But said unmarried plumbers might get married or they might get some girl pregnant so they might want their wife and/or child to be insured.

Or someone might leave a baby on their doorstep that they end up taking care of and they want to insure because as you know I know, this stuff happens.

And even young plumbers get sick and even they get old.

I think the kind of thing you're talking about is like a health savings account -- you pay out just for services needed. You can't get much more ala carte than that.

Hmmm....

What you're saying makes sense but it makes less sense than a basic universal coverage where people/companies/organizations can buy up on benefits.

You could be right, and you usually are, that this is a patch but I get the feeling that they forgot to clean the wound before applying the bandage.

American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees
American Chiropractic Association
American Federation of Teachers
American Nurses Association

American Podiatric Medical Association
American Psychological Association

Guttmacher Institute
International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
International Longshore & Warehouse Union
International Union of Painters and Allied Trades
National Association of Social Workers

National Spinal Cord Injury Association
National Partnership for Women & Families
National Women's Law Center
Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Small Business Majority

Now the AARP has come out agaisnt the bill,

The Hill

I also found some great information from a blog written by a small business owner who happnes to be a diabetic so he's looking at the issue from both sides.
Diabetes Advocacy Blog

Bottom line this bill has too many flaws and another solution needs to be reached.
