What does any member here who wishes to speculate believe would be the consequences of throwing open our borders to anyone who wishes to enter, with the sole requirement that everyone be examined by authority at the border to prevent smuggling and for security purposes?
It has worked like that with Canada for over 200 years with little or no problem. (I could tell some family stories here but that would distract the discussion.) However Canada and the US have a common history, population, economy, and standard of living. To do the same with Mexico would be a disaster because of the great disparity in both culture and economy. I think ultimately if we want the same kind of border with Mexico we have with Canada, the US has to put more effort into raising the Mexican economy to first world status, which is possible, but that takes takes a commitment which we would seem to rather expend on Iraq.
Ill be back to post something on the sub-pithy level, but right now Im busy making posters to welcome Rick Santorum to Southern Lancaster and Chester Counties.
