Why isn't there an ignore function on A2K?

This is something I've wondered about for a bit. Can anyone elaborate?

Perhaps the answer lies in where many of the original A2K members came from. The was once a site run by the NY Time called "Abuzz" where many of us "met". Things started out well enough but after a time things got out of control and there was a lot of animosity about how they had managed the site.

One of the features Abuzz had was the ability to "rate" other users responses. While the concept was good it quickly got abused and people used it to take out their anger/frustrations on users they didn't like instead of based on the quality of their answers. (likewise they "pumped up" their friends ratings regardless of what they posted...)

Anyway, the idea of allowing users to control that sort of thing was shunned when A2K was developed. I'm pretty sure it was considered but it never happened. Part of the whole idea here was to give people a place to discuss things and groups adding their "opposition" to their iggy queue just leaves them talking to other like minded people.

That's not to say that an ignore feature couldn't make it's way into A2K's feature set someday....

Because if there were, conversation would grind to a halt in the political and religious threads.

I totally agree re the forum itself, I disagree re PMs. There are peeps tha have sent me absurd and hateful PM's and I think I would like an ignore function for that purpose.

Without Politics and Religion, no chat site would survive. If it did, the volume of participation would experience a precipitous drop in activity.

We'd have to drop Science, ID, creationism, philosophy, evolution, education, Iraq, Afghanistan, WWII, Vietnam, Korea, history, and cartoons. Wink

Yes, for example, in the IMDb message boards if you ignore someone their posts won't be shown to you.

I was just wondering why this option is not available here.

It'd be handy since threads can grow so much in a2k. It is sometimes almost impossible to read the posts of interest because of all the fluff.
