I do not think they are helpful. I do endorse a sense of humor from time to time, but these comments seem to be over the top.

Back to Obama, I think his learning Spanish comments are not going to be helpful. He is simply trying to win the Spanish vote, Mexican vote, Latino vote, and of course it is getting huge because of illegals pouring into this country for the last couple of decades and longer. And it may work with them, but it is so transparently phony, it is sad, sad, sad.

I don't need Lord Obama lecturing us about learning Spanish, when the community he "organized" in Chicago has a miserable record of even passing regular English classes. I think he needs to pull the mote out of his own eye before lecturing the rest of us.

Whew. Why is it 'transparently phony?' Do you have evidence that he doesn't actually believe that we should teach our kids Spanish or other languages?

As for his Chicago community, part of Obama's struggle was to get parents to realize that the schools sucked, the kids weren't learning, and that they as parents needed to take responsibility, instead of blaming the schools. Just the other day Jackson got in trouble, for being upset that Obama had the guts to criticize the black community instead of 'focusing on the injustices done to them.' He has the nerve to tell black communities that they need to take personal responsibility, and that is directly opposite to the 'you are oppressed' approach of Jackson. So it seems to me that he learned some good lessons during his time as a community organizer; one could even say, he learned some Conservative lessons.

Thank you for your kind words opening the post.

I agree that kids in school should learn at least one foreign language. When I went to school in prehistoric, yes Cyclo I said prehistoric, times I had learned italian from my grandparents. It was the only language grandma knew. I also studied latin, and spanish in school. That was 57 years ago. I haven't used any of my foreign languages since so I don't understand nor am i able understand any of them. It helped me at the time in school but is worthless to me now.

You may have already touched on this, but I don't think the issue is the concept of putting foreign language into the curriculum. I am probably as prehistoric as you and a foreign language was considered mandatory college prep where I went to school. Nobody objects to kids learning a second language.

The issue, however, was not that but Obama's silly comment that don't worry about immigrants learning English--he added an aside that they WILL learn English--but our emphasis should be on our kids learning Spanish. There was not a lot of support for that mindset because so many people are not learning English when they come here and there is a growing resentment about that on several different fronts.

Obama is talking about learning a second language; not sacrificing English for Spanish

That over 80 percent of voters in the US doesn't want people to learn more than one language show how ignorant people in the US really are.

It is just as likely that you are ignorant.

I didn't get that from the article anyway. I got that a large percentage of Americans do not feel that it is NECESSARY (translate should be REQUIRED) to speak more than English but that English should be an uncompromisable requirement. I didn't get that they were opposed to people speaking more than one language.

The emphasis however was that Americans resent immigrants not being required to learn English and in fact, overtly or inadvertantly, they are too often being encouraged to not speak English or assimilate into American culture. They saw Obama's remarks as reinforcing that.

What's your point? That most countries around the world that requires bilingualism is wrong?

If that was my point, I would have made it my point, CI. I don't think you're even trying here.

Yall sure are grumpy. Any possibility yall could take a break from the bickering?
Going back a few pages, there was mention made of Obama and the "toothless" Nascar fans. Did you know that there is a precedent for that kind of campaign effort?

There is? Who? When? I'm not disputing it. I really want to know.

The last I heard Obama had nixed the sponsorship offer from Nascar for fear he would appear on a car featuring something else that would compromise his message. (Personally, I just think he thinks Nascar is beneath him, but that's purely an impression with no proof for it.)

I understand that Nascar has made the same offer to McCain and "one other candidate" which I am presuming is Bob Barr. It will be interesting to see if either of them accept the offer.

Addendum to RJB: You have to wonder why somebody would pass up a chance to get their name favorably before 160,000 fans plus a substantial television audience.

Thanks for asking. When Mark Warner was running for Gov of VA about 5 years ago, he realized he had a problem. He was wealthy and from northern Virginia and a Democrat. A tough sell in the rural region of VA.

But a couple of the Nascar drivers supported him and campaigned for him
to the extent of putting his name on their cars. And Warner won.

He now is running to replace the retiring U.S. senator, John Warner (no relation) and he will win in a landslide, I predict.

You sophisticated voters may watch slick TV ads that really say nothing. We "toothless" rednecks watch cars go around with an ad.

Is there any difference?

LOL. No, really there isn't. You might want to check in on the Election 2008 thread. I just posted a Ralph Peters piece that pretty well sums up how candidates are chosen via slogan, sound bites, and NASCAR ads these days. Smile

And thanks for the information re Warner. I did know that and it is interesting. As I said, if I was running for office, I wouldn't pass up a chance to pitch to 160,000 Nascar fans and a hefty television share to boot.

ci, how many people actually have a need to speak a second language in this country to succeed? Precious few I would assert. I think Obama's comments were off the mark, in fact silly. We need to do a much better job of teaching the kids three Rs and other basic subjects before teaching a second language, that would seem obvious, don't you think, ci?

By the way, you love to throw around accusations of ignorance, as if they were a dime a dozen. How are you so much smarter than everyone else? Just maybe you aren't, has that occurred to you as a possibility?

I tried, ci, to find the reference to "toothless" NASCAR fans. It is about 10 pages back here on this thread. The inference, of course, is that folks who watch car races are southern rednecks, and, as you know, southern rednecks, like realjohnboy, are missing most of their teeth. And we are stupid.

As well as all sitting around reading their Bibles and cleaning their guns. Bitterly Smile

My granddaughter, however, has been able to identify just about every Nascar running complete with number, owner, name of driver, and win/loss record since she was eight. (She's now 17). She's about as un-redneck as they come. Smile
