If Romney runs with McCain, and they're in the White House for 8 years, Mitt stands an excellent chance of becoming President after McCain.

Thanks for your take, McGentrix, you're the kind of person whose perspective I've been especially interested in. I'm encouraged that you think that way about Obama.

Not really. I don't disdain George Bush for his beliefs, per se -- I disdain how he chooses to let his beliefs dictate his actions as an extremely powerful politician. While I am not religious, personally, there are many people I admire a great deal who are (not just Christian, of course -- Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, etc., etc.)

What it comes down to for me is how someone with power wields that power, whether they are religious or not. I see a lot more promise in what Obama has said on the subject -- and what he has done -- than in what George Bush has said and done.

Miller, yes, Obama is Christian. (I don't suppose this is another jumping-off point for "but his father was Muslim and how do we know he's not secretly Muslim himself??" paranoia?)

I read all the comments from that TNR straw poll (posted by nimh a few pages back) and have to agree with the guy who said he doesn't think choosing a presidential candidate based on how they do on Leno is the wisest course. Like him, I might think Tony Robbins or any number of other speakers are gifted orators - doesn't mean I would necessarily want them to be president.

Quote:
"I'm not saying that Obama shouldn't run. I'm just wondering why lots of people think he should. If the answer is that "he is a good speaker", or "he gives me warm fuzzies", that is fine. But lets not pretend that those reasons are really good reasons. And please don't accuse me of racism for asking the question in the first place (that was pre-emptive. if you weren't going to accuse me, then it wasn't directed to you)..."

Probably about half the Dems participating in that poll thought he should run anyway. He's pretty, he talks pretty, he dresses nice.

Big deal. With thinking like that, the Dems deserve to lose.

I will admit one thing about the man. Just my initial impression. It could change.

He's smart enough (political savvy enough) to know that playing the 'victim' card won't get him anywhere.

Well, some of the Dems weren't all that happy with his little "lecture" to them on religion. Mostly the fringe-left (dailykos & moveon) who view themselves as "true progressives" and aren't about to have anything to do with religion.

Although he's said he won't accept the VP slot, I think that's all Obama would be offered for '08.

Feingold will be the Dem nominee. He's their best shot and they know it.

Tutu is a senile rabble rouser! Obama should be home where he belongs taking care of serious matters like the failing schools, or the fact that 12% of African-Americans in Illinois cannot find a job!

In recent months, Obama has also traveled to Ohio, Texas, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Alabama, New York, Washington state and Minnesota for fundraisers and speeches.

He has never done anything substantive. He admitted to using cocaine and did attend Muslim school for two years when he was young.

He is a male Hillary Rodham Clinton who seeks only publicity.

He is not the Senator for Africa. He is the Senator for Illinois.

He would have been clearly outclassed in the election of 2004 had it not been for Fitzgerald's resignation from the Senate Seat.

ANYONE WITH A SMIDGEN OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ILLINOIS POLITICS KNOWS THAT>

Obama is a high class Jesse Jackson-- A subtle race carder. I really hope that the Democratic Party makes the gigantic mistake of putting him on the ticket in 2008 as VP.

Then, Mr. Nimh would find out just how well African-Americans do in National or Statewide Races WHEN THE VOTERS ARE NOT PRIMARILY AFRICAN AMERICAN.

We shall see!

Okie- With a 40% Negativity rating, I PRAY that Hillary is the candidate--

Note- from Rasmussen Reports-----

Hillary Meter
40% Say They Would Definitely Vote Against Her in 2008
August 9, 2006
Forty percent (40%) of Americans say they would definitely vote against Senator Clinton if she is on the Presidential ballot in 2008. This is up from 34% in our last Hillary Meter survey. Twenty-nine percent (29%) said they would definitely vote for her, unchanged from two weeks ago (see trends).

This survey was completed just before the much talked about Connecticut Senate Primary, where Joe Lieberman was defeated by anti-war Democrat Ned Lamont. Some believe that the Lamont's victory may signal more complications for Senator Clinton.

Despite her challenges on a national level, Clinton holds a 30-point lead in her bid for re-election as Senator from New York.

Today's Hillary Meter places the former First Lady a net 55 points to the left of the nation's political center. Two weeks ago, she was 52 points to the left of center. Currently, 46% label her politically liberal, which is four points higher than our last survey (see trends). Just 8% consider her conservative.

The political center is calculated by subtracting the number of liberals from the number of conservatives among the general public (35% conservative, 18% liberal for a net +17). For the Senator, 8% conservative minus 46% liberal equals a net minus 38. The minus 38 reading for Senator Clinton is 55 points away from the plus 17 reading for the general public.

Forty percent (40%) of those surveyed have a favorable opinion of the senator, while 42% have an unfavorable opinion.

Still, 25% think that it is very likely that she will the Democratic nominee for President in 2008 and 34% think it is somewhat likely. These numbers have changed little over the past year.

The Hillary Meter is a twice monthly measure of Senator Hillary Clinton's effort to move to the political center. The next update is scheduled for Wednesday, August 23, 2006. For as long as the former First Lady is a viable candidate for the White House, Rasmussen Reports will monitor public perceptions of her political ideology.

end of quote

And, Okie, when the incident, that some may have forgotten, concerning Hillary's extortion is told again, there will be more people she will turn off.

Some have forgotten that the "miracle worker" Hillary Rodham Clinton, took $1,000 when her husband was governor and IN ONE YEAR, added $99,000 to it. That's right, she ended the year with $100,000.

How?

In one of the most difficult ways possible---Buying and selling CATTLE FUTURES>

Yes, this lady with NO experience in the most difficult and precarious area of buying and selling cattle futures, earned that much in a year.

Why, said some, even the old time traders never do that well.

But, you see, she said she learned by "reading the Wall Street Journal"

What a crock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some have said that the only way she could have earned so much would have been if the people handling the trade for her put a $1,000 on BOTH buy and sell whenever she traded.

Why would anyone do that?

The person handling her trades was associated with Tyson Foods--a huge Chicken Processor in Arkansas( the state where MR. Clinton was governor).

AND?

Tyson needed some legislation passed to help the huge company process their chickens more easily.

Who would help with the legislation? Bill!

What was his reward? Hillary's windfall!

Hillary Rodham Clinton--EXTORTIONIST--and that's only the first charge!!!

With the September 12 primary upcoming, what do the bluest of the blue think? A new Pace University poll, done in cooperation with New York Magazine, of state Democrats who are likely to vote in next month's primary shows that, for one thing, Hillary isn't in any danger of getting Lamont-ed by antiwar candidate Jonathan Tasini. Even if only 19 percent of likely primary voters support her stay-the-course position on Iraq, 79 percent think favorably of her.

This is a thread about OBAMA but I will remind ehBeth that Hillary is not doing something RIGHT, she is doing something LEFT as the Rasmussen Poll which covers much more territory than the Pace Poll reveals--

Hillary Meter
Left of Center, Keeping it in the Family
August 23, 2006
Today's Hillary Meter places the former First Lady a net 56 points to the left of the nation's political center. Two weeks ago, she was 55 points to the left of center, and a month ago 52 points to the left. This trend moves her closer to her husband, former President Bill Clinton, who is 57 points to the left of center. Currently, 46% label her politically liberal, unchanged from our last survey. She is seen as moderate by 31%, and just 7% consider her conservative.

The political center is calculated by subtracting the number of liberals from the number of conservatives among the general public (35% conservative, 18% liberal for a net +17). For the Senator, 7% conservative minus 46% liberal equals a net minus 39. The minus 39 reading for Senator Clinton is 56 points away from the plus 17 reading for the general public.

Former Vice President Al Gore is seen by the public as further to the left than the Clintons. Republican Presidential hopefuls John McCain and Rudy Giuliani are seen as closer to the nation's political center. President George W. Bush is 29 points to the right of center.

Thirty-nine percent (39%) of Americans say they would definitely vote against Senator Clinton if she is on the Presidential ballot in 2008, a one point drop from two weeks ago. Twenty-nine percent (29%) said they would definitely vote for her, a number which has remained steady from our past two surveys (see trends).

Thirty-nine percent (39%) of those surveyed have a favorable opinion of the senator, while 43% have an unfavorable opinion.

The Hillary Meter is a twice monthly measure of Senator Hillary Clinton's effort to move to the political center. The next update is scheduled for Wednesday, September 6, 2006. For as long as the former First Lady is a viable candidate for the White House, Rasmussen Reports will monitor public perceptions of her political ideology

She is now not just 55 points to the LEFT, but rather 56 points to the LEFT.

She is doing nothing RIGHT!!!

CONGO'S UNREST BLOCKS OBAMA VISIT

"The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa, the Congo capital, asked Obama on Tuesday to suspend his visit in the wake of reports that 14 people had been killed during three days of clashes. The hostility has intensified as Congo voters prepare to select a leader in a run-off election in early October"

I am sure that Obama might have thought he was back home in the middle of a dispute between the South Side African-American gangs in Chicago. The difference is, however, there are no cannibals in Chicago!!!

Mr. Nimh:

Are you saying the UN is LYING? They NEVER exaggerate or LIE!

Note:

UN condemns DR Congo cannibalism

Uganda helped establish the MLC rebels

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned massacres and human rights violations, including cannibalism, by rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A UN investigation said that the Ugandan-backed Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC) and two smaller factions committed atrocities between October and December in the eastern Ituri province.

More than 350 witnesses and victims interviewed by the UN confirmed earlier allegations that the MLC was responsible for rape, torture, executions and cannibalism near the town of Beni.

In one case, investigators heard how a young girl was cut into small pieces by the soldiers and then eaten.

Other examples include hearts and other organs being cut out of victims and forced on their families to eat.

A senior Congolese Government official told the BBC that the massacres demonstrated the need for a more robust UN presence in the region.

The rights investigators heard that the soldiers systematically raped women and looted houses in the town of Mambasa and in villages along the road towards Beni.

Members of the minority Pygmy community, forced to flee their forest homes for the first time anyone can remember, were among those targeted.

The Pygmies say they have been targeted by the violence

The UN spokesperson in Kinshasa described the rebel soldiers as "freaks" who were out of control and said that abusers of human rights, wherever they were in Congo, should be brought to justice.

She said a copy of the investigators' findings had been given to the UN Security Council.

The BBC's Mark Dummett in Kinshasa says that, in spite of recent advances in Congo's peace process, there is still insecurity in much of the country, particularly the north-east, where the rape and massacre of civilians have become commonplace.

'Failed state'

The Congolese Information Minister, Kikaya Bin Karubi, urged the UN to consider strengthening its observer mission, MONUC, and give it a peace enforcement status.

"Today you may deploy even more MONUC troops in the Ituri province, they will go there, and as an observer mission they will be observing people eating people.

"They will be observing cannibalism because their mandate does not allow them to intervene or to do something about it."

But the BBC's Greg Barrow at the UN headquarters in New York says Security Council members remain reluctant to support a more robust UN military presence.

Our correspondent says the UN does not want to find itself playing the role of a proxy army, providing security for a failed state that controls the capital Kinshasa, but has little power outside
