And I answered it.

Butrflynet

Given that you have Calamity on your side, perhaps I should cover my bases a bit better.

You and she were entirely correct ! (But I still like Lola.) Cool

Well this night belongs to Obama and quite possibly Huckabee

Obama's gains matter far more to Hillary than Huckabee's do to McCain, but I seriously doubt the Clinton campaign is in "a state of panic."

From the article:

"A senior Democrat who has discussed Clinton campaign thinking with a member of her inner circle said: "The Clintons are in a state of panic. She has to win both Texas and Ohio.""

Now that's authoritative. Who was the senior Democrat source? Ted Kennedy or John Kerry?

Clinton's got a seasoned campaign staff. I'm sure no one is happy about tonight's results, but I also doubt they felt they would win Louisiana. Washington may very well have been a disappointment particularly in the way that Obama spanked her. I have no sense of what anyone might have expected out of Nebraska , but there were only 38,000 participants . For that matter there were only about 32,000 participating in Washington.

The next series of primaries will probably also swing Obama's way but then comes what most experts are saying must be, for Clinton, firebreak states Texas and Ohio. A lot of people are now touting Obama's momentum, but the same thing was said in New Hampshire.

This is a rollercoaster of a race and I appreciate that supporters want to take the most optimistic view of their candidate's performance, but exuberance tends to lead to exaggeration.

Ah, George, if I'm wrong more often will you like me too? :::demurely flutters eyelashes flirtatiously at you:::

By the way, you were also right. Nimh and Cyclo are good people who are committed to their candidate too.

You are always extremely gracious. I try to follow your example, but I dont quite have the equanimity and patience for it yet. Perhaps that will come with the years.

If Sen Obama becomes president or even president-elect, what do you think the chances are of him being shot, on the issue of colour?

Nothing specific. I just think there are still interests in the US, with tendency to violence, who would not stand for having a black president.
But you're closer to it than I am, and that's why I ask.

Ah, just figured out what instigated your question...

Makes one wonder why people aren't just as concerned over the number of knuckle draggers out there who might do similar things before allowing a woman to become president.

Curiouser and curiouser....

Considering the Texas primary is upcoming, something tells me we will be hearing stories about Doris Lessing's comments and relating them to Dallas, JFK and Oswald.

A strange thing to say. Also false. I had never heard of Doris Lessings comment.
Nor the others.

A lot less that they would have been 30 or 40 years ago, but there are plenty of nuts out there that might want to harm him just because to do so will make the criminal extremely famous.

I think he can feel fairly safe with the Secret Service protecting him. There have to be quite a few maniacs out there who believe they would become the heros of the Bush-Haters if they could knock W off, and President Bush has remained safe without having to live in a bunker.

We can only pray it doesn't happen

Not all that strange considering she's a famous British author and current Nobel Laureate and her interview and comments in the Swedish newspaper have suddenly appeared in the international news media too. That, and coincidentaly, I was sent the first article in an email by some unknown someone almost immediately after reading your response to my question. I hadn't heard of her or her comment before so did a search to find out who she was and found the other articles I linked to and many others. It seems to have become a topic of conversation all over the internet in blogs now.

Wasn't meant to cause any offense. It is a sensitive topic here and one that anonymous callers keep bringing up in push-polls when calling voters in states with large minority populations.

It is a topic that makes me very angry on many levels. Nothing directed at you personally.

"States with large minority populations". You Americans are so delicate!

I'm not trying to be offensive either. Maybe it's just that we older Brits have a baleful view of some of America, reinforced by the appearances of Mr Bush on our screens, and the antics of him and and his coterie.
Hell, some of them even shoot their friends!

McTag,
The idea terrifies me - the prospect of Obama being killed by someone of the ilk who will never ever accept a black man as the head of the most powerful country terrifies and saddens me terribly.

I believe this country's ability to hope and dream was wounded by the deaths of MLK and JFK and RFK (and to some extent, Malcomb). I believe that those assassin's bullets made a wound in the psyche of people that helped to create and grow a lasting cynicism about the whole concept of democratic governance. I believe that killing Obama would create the same kind of poisonous wound in the minds and hearts of those who have been challenged by his candidacy to believe again.

And I think that would be a tragedy bigger than my poor ability to grasp or express.

There are many reasons I want Obama to win, but, obliquely, this is one of the main ones. That so many non-Americans can't believe that Americans would actually stand for having a black president.

I think it would be an incredibly powerful message if that's exactly what we do. ("What? Americans voted a black president into office? I'm shocked! Better re-evaluate my opinion of America and Americans...")

As for the question itself -- will he be assassinated? -- we've talked about that here before. I think there will always be kooks, period, but that there are security measures in place and that I don't think that Obama is necessarily in MORE danger than any other president. Certainly not a reason not to vote for him anyway. (And I think that was part of Butrfynet's reaction -- we've seen stuff in America about people not wanting to vote for Obama to "save" him.)
