Meanwhile, Hillary allies in Nevada are trying to shut down nine at-large caucus locations on the Las Vegas strip that would enable many casino workers to participate who might not otherwise be able to caucus.

The lawsuit to prevent those caucus locations from opening was filed by six Nevada Democrats and the Nevada State Education Association teachers' union. The deputy executive director of that union, Debbie Cahill, is a member of Clinton's Nevada Women's Leadership Council.

Considering that the culinary workers union has just endorsed Obama, the timing of this move seems very dubious - they never spoke up about it before. Culinary union secretary-treasurer Taylor told the AP that the teachers union is using "Floridian Republican tactics to suppress cooks, housekeepers, people of color and women."

Josh Marshall comments: "If there's one thing that's core to the modern Democratic party is that voter suppression tactics are always wrong. Much of the US Attorney purge scandal was at root about Republican voter suppression tactics. [..] Please leave these shameful tactics to Republicans."

Thats a joke. Democrats always try to suppress votes they don't like. Remember the military votes in Florida?

So much stuff going on the last few days, and I'm trying not to just keep putting in links to this and that, but I thought this was a particularly interesting fact-check on some of the claims Hillary made about Obama on Meet the Press:

A double-plus for Obama, and a negative-5 for Clinton. She's looking more like a friggen politician that wants the white house more than truth.

Fascinating exchange between Rev. Joseph Lowry (Obama supporter) and Congressman John Lewis (Clinton supporter) on "Newshour" just now. Lowry did really well IMO, I'll try to find a transcript later. Basically he kept talking about let's get past this, lets focus on the issues, if Hillary didn't mean how about if she just says she didn't mean it and we can move on. Then Lewis was saying stuff about how Obama was behind all the agita and then Lowry was very good about pointing out that it was coming from Clyburn, from Brazile, neutral people. Lewis hinted darkly that Obama was behind it -- that he'd made them say it, basically -- and Lowry reacted to that really well. (Basically, they're their own people, they're reasonable people, they're going to say what they think, they're not puppets. He didn't say "puppets.")

It's an interesting column, curious about what you think when you've read the whole thing.

Meanwhile,

I think Obama's been handling it fine, but I think it's very risky, and I think a comment that puts him entirely above the fray, a la his comment on Biden during one of the debates, would be both in character and a good way out of this mess. It runs the risk of turning off SC black voters, but I think he can do it.

Obama comments today:

Quote:
You have seen a tone on the Democrat[ic] side of the campaign that has been unfortunate. I want to stipulate a couple of things. I may disagree with Senator Clinton and Senator Edwards on how to get there, but we share the same goals. We all believe in civil rights. We all believe in equal rights. They are good people. They are patriots....
I don't want the campaign at this stage to degenerate to so much tit-for-tat, back-and-forth, that we lose sight of why we are doing this."

Obama said he wants to send "a strong signal to my own supporters that let's try to focus on the work that needs to get done. If I hear my own supporters engaging in talk that I think is ungenerous or misleading or unfair, I will speak out forcefully against it....

Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton have historically been on the right side of civil rights issues. They care about the African American community.… That is something I am convinced of. I want Americans to know that is my assessment."

He's absolutely refusing to play their game and they (his opponents, the media, etc.) just don't know how to deal with it.
This is soooooo gooooood.

Very classy and/or very clever. The Hill/Bill tactics look that much more disrespectable in the face of such a response.

I believe both Clintons want to win, by any means. Inserting racism and misquotes, out of context, calling Obama a "kid", claiming she has 35 years of experience. I ask "where"? I know she was first lady for 8, but 35? She's a swift-boating liar, too!

I saw it too! Rev. Lowery, an "old-school", civil rights leader, told Lewis, not to get in the middle of this and opine on what others think! Really good response! Cool

You can hire a brain surgeon to try it on me, ci, but I frankly wouldn't trust anyone that you would hire to do the examination.

teeny, Lowry and Lewis, 2 great men stuck in the middle of this nonsense. MLK is being badly used. "I believe both Clintons want to win, by any means." I believe that too.

Obama handled this all perfectly. Smart, smart man.

I'm in new york right now joining Lola for a yearly psychoanalytic conference. We went for dinner with about twenty others tonight and a lady came and sat next to us because she wanted to meet 'bernie'. We began talking politics right off the bat and I was saying negative things about press coverage of the election. She'd mentioned that her husband, who's in DC, couldn't come because he's too busy and then I inquired what he did. Turns out he's the publisher for the Washington Post. Bernie was a bit embarrassed. We yakked for two hours full tilt. Wonderful woman. Wonderful stories about Katherine Grapham, Jim Lehrer, Ben Bradlee. Sheesh...that was fun.
