@Cycloptichorn,
My apologies. The post was from The New Republic and not Salon, although McWhorter (yes, I misspelled his name as well . . . it was very late when I posted this and I was falling asleep) has published on Salon as well as TNR, and is a frequent contributor to NPR.
Don't jump to conclusions: the man is considered a conservative.
I reread his article twice and I have no idea what gave okie the notion that this man thinks Obama may be a Muslim. That is not what he said. He said it doesn't matter whether he is or isn't. He also pointed out that there were rumors FDR was a Jew and being called a Jew in America during the 30s and 40s was a serious negative label.
Still in his 40s, McWhorter attended Friends School in Philly then Simon's Rock College. Although those sound like prime liberal creds, they aren't in his case. He later earned a degree in French from Rutgers, then a degree in American Studies from NYU and, finally, a doctorate in linguistics from Stanford.
He has taught at Cornell, Berkeley and Columbia. He is also a fellow at the conservative think-tank, the Manhattan Institute.
