Elizabeth Drew has an excellent article in the New York Book Review about the election. It is a long one, but worth the read. Lots of food for thought and discussion.

@Butrflynet,
Per Dkos, as the final vote tallies are coming in, Obama's lead grows in the popular vote -

Total votes: 130,222,663
Obama: 68,724,397
McCain: 59,599,875
Margin: 9,124,522
Percent margin: 7.00% (52.77% to 45.77%)

7% victory, more than 9 million vote lead.

So the "get the dumbmasses out to vote" movement was a success.

Obama

1st Black president.
1st "American Idol" president.

One out of two ain't bad.

@H2O MAN,
Big talk from someone who has been wrong about everything they've posted.

Kevin, you lost harder than McCain with all your big talk.

Am I imagining things, or are more and more Whites in my town terrorist-fist-bumping each other? To me, anyway, this seems like yet another Obama meme spreading into the general American culture.

Can we let the Obama '08 thread die now that the election is over?

@maporsche,
You already have that option. Just collapse the thread and you'll no longer see it.

Thomas, it was already part of general American culture, which was kind of the whole point when the right wing religious wacko bloggers showed just how completely out of touch they were when they tried to claim Michelle gave a "terrorist fist bump". It didn't used to have any verbal ascription, but now people doing it in Boston will often say "terrorist fist bump" or "Obama bump" or something similar as they do it, in a sort of ironic nod to the loons who are always willing to invent the worstpossible motives with no evidence.

Its really funny to see that those who are bitching now about this thread continuing are the same ones who have been consistently negative about Obama's candidacy throughout. If you don't like it, collapse it and ignore it, or just dutifully hang around kvetching like you have done throughout and STFU otherwise.

@snood,
it is amazing though. threads don't last long these days. this one lasted over two years, and also in the face of many many many related threads appearing that could have sapped away it's attendance. Crazy.

I wondering if Obama can change the last minute changes that Bush is making right before he leaves office. Once they are enacted are they written in stone?

- Opening protected land to energy development
- Allowing factory farms to self-regulate waste
- Altering solid waste definition

This is actually legally permissible and constitutional, that such a loser gets to cram in as many horrible things as he can?

Shouldn't he be in care-taker mode, or something? Just keeping the wheels turning?

I think our system is better...the changeover happens immediately.

@dlowan,
Good question. I'm not sure any succeeding president would want to reverse actions taken by the previous president unless it has to do with national security.

Bush is doing his best to perserve his place as the worst president in the history of the U.S.. Obama shouldent have much of a problem looking better than the last administration. But if the democrates dont do some drastic changing of government I will be looking to change governments in the next election. After the dems gained control of the government 2 years ago I was very upset with them blameing the republicans for the bad government we got. They wouldent confront the presidential illigal actions. The republicans are all balls and no brains but the democrates are all brains and no balls. I wish we had a third party for which we could vote that was interested in the welfare of the common citizens because as I see it both the present parties are for the rich and big business.

@rabel22,
True; the dems not only didn't challenge Bush's illegal actions, but supported the extension of the war in Iraq after they promised to end it. It's true that the republican filibuster stopped the democratic congress, but that's not an excuse for what they did and didn't accomplish. They deserve the public's low rating.

Obama will be president, whether I like it or not, so the thread remains pertinent. Obama is an issue, in and of himself, just to figure the guy out. He ran on change, and won mainly because of his opposition to the war in Iraq, now appoints as Secretary of State a senator that supported the war. Go figure? Who knows what next?

Who cares what she supported, Okie? Her job is to do what he says. Not to do what she thinks is right; to do what HE thinks is right.

Geez
