I just heard the promo for this on the radio this morning...
I am actually interested in watching it.
If the show is done correctly (as in like a documentary), it could really be good and educational to people. It would be very interesting to see both the positive and negative sides of each family's experience. If don't poorly (like most reality shows) it will be just like every other reality crap-show out there.
Check it out here.

What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Stupid as hell?
I am planning on Tivoing it because CSI is on at 10p tonight but I will watch it.
I choose to withhold my massively negative opinion until I actually see how they will work this.

Please share why you have a negative attitude already.
I think it
could be very good. I am a little hesitant because it is on FX. And they aren't known for their documentaries. But hey, maybe it will be a success.
I got to see several clips from the show and interview with the participants on Oprah a few weeks back. It will be much, much more a reality show than a documentary, trust me. They encourage frequent dramatic confrontations and epiphanies, and it just left me cold. But it will probably get good ratings, and be all the buss on EXTRA and other tabloid shows.
I kind of recall a promo for it as well and tuned it out immediately. It's a reality show, and all that that implies, and bound to, as snood said, leave one cold.
I saw the pics of people before and after -- the makeup looked pretty weak, to me, and how is it supposed to work if they're not even believable?
Interesting premise, though, if unoriginal. ("Black like me", etc.)
Reality tv shows are the true representation of the decline of our civilization.
RIP

Well that sucks. I was hoping it wouldn't be one of those shows. Unfortunate that the ratings will, as you said, probably be good. I don't get how people are entertained by that whole "let's get everyone against each other" drama crap.
Just curious. Did anyone see it? I got home from class in time to catch the last 20 minutes or so of the first episode. Here's a review in Slate that pretty much says what I think about it...

I think this could be a good idea for a show. However, I think Snood is right about the "encouraging frequent dramatic...." and that is more than sad to me.
Awhile back wife swap had a (please excuse the phrasing but this is what was portrayed) blonde, barbie-doll type, snotty, rich white woman trade places with an overweight, obviously not rich, black woman for two weeks. It could have been a wonderful show.
The white family did no community service, just shopped, got their nails done, etc., you know, stereotypical things. The black family was deeply committed to community service, church, family, etc.
Unfortunately, the show did nothing but reinforce a stereotype of the white family in my eyes. I would hate to see this show do the same thing. People need to understand each other's cultures and understandings of life around them. The media could be so helpful in this, and yet, they seem to promote problems instead of solutions with this type of entertainment.
Quote: The show is edited so that their dramatic purpose is to try to explain to Bruno that nobody's going to call him bad names and to talk to one another about These Crazy White People. Brian on the dashikis Carmen buys to wear to church: "Why don't they just dress like Aunt Jemima on the syrup bottle and get it over with?" That's a funny line, and an apt one, and Black. White. plays it for nothing more or less than a wisecrack. The show's an entertaining provocation, but it's also only skin-deep.
This pretty much sums it up. Another stupid ass reality show.
here's the thing about "changing races" it's meaningless really because these people know at the end of the day when they remove their makeup....... bada bing!!! They're changed back....
it does however give people of both races a chance to pat themselves on the back about how enlightened they are... personally for a warm fuzzy I'd rather just burn a fattie.......then have sex with squinney. She's half German and half Native American so I'm doing the nasty with an oppressed minority AND a nazi... man I'm one multicultural sumbitch....
I didn't see this or really hear anythig about it but I think it could be an interesting premise for a show.
I had a good friend who was white but looked very much like she was black. She had been married to a black man and had two bi-racial daughters. According to her, she was "passing" (a word you thankfully don't hear much anymore but in her context it was kind of ironic).
She often commented on how people "edited" around her until they came to know that she was white.
Then they were different.
Then they met her daughters and became confused once again.
It made meeting men and dating a little complicated, said she, but it allowed her to weed out the jerks from the good guys pretty quickly.
