cannot access volume control

Reply Sun 19 Feb, 2006 08:30 am
The volume control icon just disappeared from the tool bar...and every attempt to reaccess the control has ended in failure.

I've gone to the Microsoft site and followed instructions on some of their FAQ's...but no luck. And...of all bad luck...it disappeared while at no volume!!! One simply cannot play poker without sounds.

Anyone got any suggestions.

(I still haven't convinced Nancy that we should buy a new computer as Timber suggested after my last problem.)

Thanx in advance.

Hiya Frank!

Have you tried: Start>settings>control panel>sounds and audio devices? On the first page, there is a box that you can check which says, "Place volume icon on the taskbar". Let me know if that helps!

Have you tried lightly tapping it with a sledgehammer? That has worked wonders for me in so many similar situations.

Someone actually told me that once.

Only one page...and no "Place volume icon..."

The volume control devise itself seems to be gone...not just the icon.

How ya been? I'm slowly working my way back to A2K. Very slowly.

I am considering tapping it with some force with a sledge if this goddam thing doesn't stop all its shennanigans.

I am fine, and glad to see that you are back. I missed ya!

I have another idea abut your volume, but for the life of me, I can't remember how to access it! Embarrassed I am going out for a little while, and maybe it will come to me!

It came to me. Rolling Eyes Do you know how to get to "device manager"? Check out the "sound, video and game controllers".

Frank- Do you have Win 98 or XP? When I had 98, and there was a glitch,
I would lose many of the icons on my taskbar. When I rebooted, they reappeared.

98.

The problem is not with the icon...the problem is that the volume control is missing from the computer.

Under 98, go into Device Manager, delete all drivers under video and audio. Be sure that you have replacement drivers handy, do not do this without having them in hand and on a separate disk. Then you restart.

When you restart, Window will automatically re-recognize these devices. It will ask you if you want to use existing drivers, or load from new. Load from new so that the drivers overwirte those currently on the system.

Once done, you'll probably need to restart again, and then you should have everything back. Good luck, PM me if you need more help.

Also Have your WIN98 CD Ready!!

Windows XP
Hi, I've got this same problem. Does the method described for uninstalling and reinstalling drivers work for Windows XP too?
