Seems like the religious right is telling Bush to change his attitudes. That is a good sign. He cannot snub them, they represent many votes for Republicans.

Right feels heat
10 feb 06

A GROUP of powerful church leaders has defied the Bush White House and called for federal legislation to curb global warming.

They said "any damage we do to God's world is an offence against God himself."

The statement by more than 80 high-profile church names marks the first time the religious Right has taken up the green issue.

Sections have has embraced the environment in recent years, most notably with a "What Would Jesus Drive?" campaign against petrol-guzzling four-wheel-drive vehicles.

The statement - signed by pastors such as Rick Warren, author of the bestseller, The Purpose-Driven Life, heads of Christian colleges and missionary organisations - puts saving "God's green earth" on a par with traditional concerns such as abortion and gay rights.

The leaders pledge to pray and work together to stop global warming and call on Congress to enact legislation similar to parts of the Kyoto accords, which President Bush rejected.

It's an encouraging initiative. Heck, if we here in a relatively educated and information-rich culture cannot marginalize the extremist religious figures, what chance it happening in the Middle East?

Laughing I remember a lot of democrats saying that about traditional blue collar workers before the 92 elections, and more recently about the environmentalists in 2000.

They don't need to vote Dems to hurt Repubs. They just need to not vote Repub. Heck who knows, the Religious Right is feeling very powerful right now maybe they'll put up their own Religious Right Ralph Nader...

Anyway those sound like famous last words to me... 2 Cents
