We are going to the Humane Society today to look for a new member of the family. Don't know what we are looking for or what we'll find but we are going to go and see what awaits us.

I am so excited! I've wanted a dog now forever. Very Happy

Enjoy. Consider an adult dog--everyone wants puppies but the older dogs....

I know it would be the "right" thing to do to get an older dog, but with an older dog, sometimes the training is a bit difficult, as they already have their ways set. We plan on having children and would like to be able to start from the beginning with training our dog.

My advice: choose a breed based on behavior rather than looks.

Dogs have been bred for so long that all you have to do is imagine the traits you want, then pick the breed that has 'em.

Make sure you don't take an excessive amount of drugs and fall asleep near the dog.

If for some reason you are so inclined to do so, make sure you wear a hockey mask.

Ok, here's my list:

bowls
food and reward goodies
collar
leash and harness
brush
id tag
traning pads
stain remover
chew toys

Am I overlooking something?

Paper towels and bleach
plastic baggies - er, you know why

Some puppies, if they're very small, respond to a ticking clock when they sleep or other white noise, it reminds them of Mommy.

How many hours would the puppy be alone during
the day? Some dogs handle that better than others.

M-F, generally 4 our of the 5 days, the dog would be alone for 5 hours, I'd be home for an hour for lunch, and then he'd be alone for 2-3 hours before my hubby or I got home. Sat and Sun, I am home all day.

Awww...!

By the way, don't feel bad about making a few trips if nobody strikes you as being YOUR dog on the first trip. You're still doing a good thing, and the better fit you and the dog are, the happier everyone is.

That's doable Bella, since you can go home for lunch.
Good luck for finding your right match. He/she will surely
be the best, loyal companion you've ever had.
I could not imagine my life without a dog.
Here is our Max - who demands a lot of attention though

What a cutie!!!

Though I am thinking something a little larger....

I really want a mastiff but....generally speaking there aren't many of them just hanging around.

..!

For cleaning up poo. Ammonia smells too much like urine (it's one of the components of urine) so dogs think a spot in the house is okay to mark. Not the case with bleach, but keep in mind that a dog determined to mark will do so unless trained not to.

Our Jake was a mastiff mix. A gentle giant, really a wonderful, slobbery pooch.
