Bella Dea,

Bleach is bad for most carpet. What you can do though is use white vinegar. It really helps with the smell. I use it quite a bit here at the cat shelter.

I know they make cleaner especially for pee....do those not work?

I just HATE the smell of vinegar.

Bella Dea,

I have never found a single product made for pet urine smell to work. You don't smell the vinegar, Bella Dea. It is just a clean and fresh smell. You have to use the white distilled vinegar though. Not the apple cider kind.

But, don't waste your money on the products that claim to eradicate urine smell. No way do they work.

Almost forgot, if you do get a puppy that needs to be housebroken you can get those plastic pads (incontinent pads) to help. Don't buy the ones made for animals because they are more expensive and are the same thing as the ones for humans.

My dog came from a rescue center, and I prefer the little
ones, they're less intimidating. Smile

Bella, don't you live in an apartment? A big dog needs a
lot of room, long walks and eats double the amount of a
smaller one. So consider also the extra expenses a
bigger dog will bring.

We live in a townhome with two levels and we have a basement so a larger dog isn't really too much of an issue.

Bella, have you purchased a dog yet? Your thread was the impetus for my decision to purchase a dog. I have just returned with "Scruffy"

Don't rule out older dogs Bella. Puppies are very time consuming and the first 6 months can mean plenty of trouble. All our older dogs came with some training and learned new tricks and manners very quickly. Shelters also test older dogs for good temperment. I've only had two dogs withattitude problems and I got both as puppies, they were just born aggressive.

If you really want a Mastiff you might be able to find one at Mastiff Rescue: http://mastiff.org/exhibit-hall/rescue/index.htm. Many people get this breed of dog and then discover how much they eat and how much room they take up and they give them away.

Whatever you decide- I hope you find the little buddy of your dreams.
