Quote:
"It's not that you don't have some terrifically talented people going into teaching. You do," said Richard J. Murnane, an economist at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. "The issue is that you don't have enough. And many are the most likely to leave teaching, because they have lots of other opportunities."

Same story here in Oz, k.
A mystery.
But then, schools sometimes get around shortages in particular subject areas by having teachers without actual qualifications (in say, Maths or Science) to teach in them. Also by increasing the amount of time teachers actually teach so fewer extra teachers are needed.

The two schools I worked in last year both added classrooms even. They did hire for the classrooms (maybe 5 new classrooms for the two schools). But, only one of the many licensed employees who, like me, held oddball positions got hired to the system.

Not cheaper, more experienced. But the new hires were also new to the schools.

Ah. I see. They could have given you a chance though ..... especially since they knew you and knew were perfectly competent.

In my neck of the woods schools are often doing the exact opposite: hiring less experienced staff because they're cheaper. Making ends meet, I think it's called. Like hiring 3 for the price of 2 & all that ......

I imagine that that is also going on up here, MsO. They can't hire me yet. I am not certified until I pass my last exam and the state reviews me. And, I am not done with my Masters (which only matters in some districts). But other subs are fully licensed and ready to go, but not being hired. Makes me noivous.

Took my last exam. Will probably have to take it again. The math on this test was much more advanced than the math on the practice test. But, oddly, I feel I did well on the written responses (as opposed to the multi choice).

Almost time for that test grade! In the mean time, yesterday I received my final papers back from the last class. I got As, but even better, she asked for a copy of my paper to use as an exemplar. This is a first! I was so incredibly happy.

Test scores to come.
