Heh heh, had to post this too, from the same issue this week:
Tortured Ugandan Political Prisoner
Wishes Uganda Had Oil
KAMPALA, UGANDA?-A day after having his hands amputated by soldiers backing President Yoweri Museveni's brutal regime, Ugandan political prisoner Otobo Ankole expressed regret Monday over Uganda's lack of oil reserves. "I dream of the U.S. one day fighting for the liberation of the oppressed Ugandan people," said Ankole as he nursed his bloody stumps. "But, alas, our number-one natural resource is sugar cane." Ankole, whose wife, parents, and five children were among the 4,000 slaughtered in Uganda's ethnic killings of 2002, then bowed his head and said a prayer for petroleum
That one hurts..... a lot.
I think the best humour has always been humour that makes you think very hard about real issues, political and societal. Uganda is a situation I have actually followed since the Idi Amin days, and it is truly horrible there. I think the brief searing Onion bit addresses several key issues, and the original post really is a mirror in the face of America, and it's motivations. I think The Onion's fake news is far more pointed than the real news, as it addresses issues with a skewed sense of humour, presents real facts at the same time, and is truly no-holds-barred, unlike much of our 'legitimate' media. In fact, some past articles have inspired me, a political neophyte, really, to investigate further into political issues around the world. I hope they keep it up.
