A big Welcome! to the Bear.
My first chances to vote - The candidates were Goldwater/Johnson. I knew better than to vote for Goldwater, but disliked and distrusted LBJ. I abstained. Then it was Humphrey/Nixon. I abstained for similar reasons. Next it was Nixon/McGovern. Abstain. At last, I cast my first vote - Carter over Ford. I regretted my vote a few years later, especially since Ford was one of the few Republicans I ever really liked. I've regretted most of my votes. I voted Reagan because Carter had no handle on inflation. Then I voted Mondale. and so it goes -
Yo bear! :-D Kewl re the all-metal band.
I recall heading to some hotel (now the name escapes me) around here for the Anderson post-election party. Of course we were all crying in our beer, so friends and I went to check out the Reagan victory party, mainly 'cause we figured it would be more lively. And so I was treated to one of the worst pickup lines of all time:
"Oh, he (Anderson) was my second choice."
Anderson was the Diogenese (sp?) of the 1980 race. Looking for an honest man. Bush Sr. spoke no less than the truth when he described Reagan's "economic policy" as voodoo economics. Given the second slot on the ticket, he kept his big mouth shut thereafter. John Anderson was giving people the truth, so you knew he had no chance. I voted for him, and was angry that he had about 20% support before election day, and pulled only about 6% of the vote. His former supporters should at least have had the decency to assure he'd pull enough of a vote to get Federal matching funds. I would not be surprised to learn that he's still in debt from that campaign.
Hey, BP -- long time, no see. How are you (and where are you)?
Hubert Humphrey, the Happy Warrior, 1968.
just bein' nosy here, Boss--is your avatar a picture of Max himself?
Ha ha ha ha!
No, Setanta, but thank you very much for asking.
It is a vanilla one in the avatar library, though maximom has been on me to personalize it with a likeness.
Now if I was a handsome rake like yourself, I would possibly consider it...
I enjoy the anonimity that sites such as this afford.
And your question reminds me of the dilemma encountered by those who happen upon the proud new parents and their simian replicant offspring.
What does one say when prompted "Isn't (s)he just the cutest thing you've ever seen?"
I thought it was a likeness of Winston Churchill in his teens.
Lyndon Johnson 1964 (voting in Massachusetts)
I also voted for Endicott 'Chub' Peabody for governor that year. He was a not-very-successful, one-term governor. He was unusual in that he was a democrat even though he came from a Boston brahmin family.
The joke used to be that Peabody had TWO Massachusetts towns named after him -Peabody and Marblehead.
Presidential Elections
I cast my first ever vote in a National Election in 1972 for McGovern.
JFK under threats of bodily harm from my republican husband who thought Nixon was a gift of the gods!
George McGovern I think...
kinda gave up after that.
BillW - welcome to Abuzz?
Thanks LW, I am so ashamed ----
For anyone who wishes to know, I changed my post above! Now LW, be good and wish MagginKat a WELCOME to A2K (ahem).
