Religious McDonald's Sign Draws Attention In Raleigh

Woman Asks Restaurant To Remove Sign, 'Jesus Is The Reason For The Season'

POSTED: 7:16 am EST December 14, 2005
UPDATED: 10:25 am EST December 14, 2005

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Everyone celebrates religion and holidays in their own individual ways, but currently there are questions about whether the two should be more connected. One of the latest places involved in the controversy is a McDonald's restaurant in Raleigh.

Discussion: Christmas vs. Holiday Controversy

The sign at McDonald's on the corner of Falls of Neuse and Spring Forest Road reads: "Merry Christmas, Jesus is the Reason for the Season." It is a holiday message that Amanda Alpert thinks comes on a little too strongly.

"It offends me because it specifically talks about Jesus, Merry Christmas. It doesn't give credit to anyone else," Alpert said.

Alpert called the McDonald's corporate office in Atlanta and requested that the sign be changed to the politically correct Happy Holidays. The response was the owner has the right to do what she wants with the sign.

"I care because I'm Jewish, and the reason for the season is upsetting to me," Alpert said.

None of the drivers WRAL spoke to were offended by the sign.

"I've always known it to be Merry Christmas, and it is Jesus' birthday," said Tom David of Smithfield.

It's a debate that's struck a chord nationally and locally. The White House Christmas card surprised some with its "Happy Holiday Season" message. A proposed nativity scene in Raleigh recently drew a crowd at council chambers.

McDonald's managers say the sign has been good for business. They say church groups have stopped by to eat, and some people who usually don't eat food from McDonald's have stopped by because of the sign. The store's owner did not return WRAL's calls.

Quite right. Let's keep government out of the restaurant business, and the rest of us can trade where we are most comfortable.

I agree. It helps us know where the crazy nutbags are, so we can avoid them.

That's weird, I pass that very McDonalds every day going to and from work, and I've never noticed that sign.
If you eat at McDonalds all the time, you get to see jesus sooner, rather than later.

I'm not offended. If she was, she should take her McMoney elsewhere.

This is great news. Finally I have something to answer when someone says, "Is there anything Bush has done that you don't think is moronic?"

Shouldnt a heathen i.e non-Christian be allowed to visit a Mcdonalds without being preached to ? Am going for a burger not a sermon.
Its not as though McDee's portrays itself as a religious brand that we know what to expect.

This sign does not appear to be inside the McDonald's. Hmmm. I would think if someone saw this sign outside and thought they might get preached to or at, they just wouldn't go in. But, that's just me.

Even though I think that the sign is inappropriate, I think that the concept of keeping government out of private business overrides any discomfort about it which I might feel.

If I were in that town, I might just take my business elsewhere. Obviously, that McDonalds understood the demographics in their area, and the sign brought in more business for them. THAT is what the sign is REALLY about!

Life is full of choices. Choices for Christians, atheists, heathens, and even restaurants. Now, if anyone were required to eat at McDonalds, I would have a big problem with this. Children are required to attend school; hence my big problem with school prayer and the altered Pledge of Allegiance. Surely, you can see the difference.

Phoenix,

Can I ask, how do you know that is what the sign is about? I am not saying it isn't, mind you. I just want to know why you think that is what it is saying.

Did I tell you the story of the eighty-something-year-old man who sat down on a park bench next to me in broad daylight and proceeded to tell me about his newfound hobby--performing oral sex acts on young asian men in porn movies? That happened there. And I thought there were a lot of freaks in NYC...

And this is also why state-induced smoking bans are a f*cking joke also. Why the hell didn't everyone voice this opinion when they put their noses in our business then?

yes i can certainly see the difference. But Mcdees like Hilton or Holiday Inn pride themselves in giving the same brand and products/service everywhere in the World.

Idea being you go to a Hilton and you know what to expect.

Now if i went into Mcdees in India I wouldnt expect them to say 'We dont do beef, cows are like holy'

If i go into Mcdees I dont want religion, sermons, politics, current affairs or preachers.

'Do you do burgers?'
'yes'
'Burgers and fries please,'

'Would you like a side order of salvation with them fries?'

'No!! I just want food!! fast'

grrrr.
