Any ideas on how to de-ice a frozen downspout?
Mine decided to fill with water and freeze soild. So far it has been drianing from the top, but I want to try to de-ice it before it gets to cold and causes ice damage to my roof.
I find a couple of warm hands wrapped round my downspout works wonders.
My downspout is much to large to be handled by only a couple of warm hands.
The lord has a secretary with projectile mamaries that I am quite sure could warm the downspouts.
In all seriousness, is what you Colonials call a downspout, in actual fact a drainpipe that takes water from the gutter, down to the ground?
try a roof heating cable . i you'd live in canada , you could pick one up at a "canadian tire store" , try "home depot" . hbg
Do YOU know what he's on about, hbg? Being part of the Commonwealth, you may be able to translate for me.
Yes, a downspout carries water from the gutter down to the ground (or in this case directly into the city sewage).
HBG, will the cable still work if the downspout is already frozen solid?
Well, it depends on how much ice you have up there, but I would have a go at melting it with a hair dryer on the hottest setting and then put the cable in place.
How exactly is this going to damage your roof, jpin?
I think my entire spout is frozen solid... about 15 feet. That may be the only solution though.

If the water backs up far enough to form an ice damn on my roof it can cause serious damage. I just finished replacing my entire roof this very summer and don't really want to do it again any time soon.
If there is more than one of you there, maybe someone can hold a small fan heater against the lower part, while you have a go at the top.
How far up did you go with your underlay?
Or, as they would ask in England, pip pip, cheerio, mate, underlay and all that?
You forgot to add the wot wot?
I'm off to bed now jp, so I wish you good luck and hope you sort the problem.
G'night, Gus.
