ZeroSum methodology first came into prominent use during the late 50's when southern politicans were fighting civil rights legislation. The idea of this inane methodology was "if you give "them" more rights it takes away from my rights." I am thinking that we are seeing this same idiocy reborn by the christian right around such issues as gay marriage along with other "hot" issues. Their thinking/logic goes something along the lines of "if gays are given rights such as marriage it takes away our rights (demeans)." This is, of course, horse hocky. Extending "rights" to others does not diminish your rights, rather, it enhances all rights for all people. Rights are not finite.
As lunacy runs rampant, it is very reassuring to hear sane souls voice the truth.
If someone else is having great sex, my sex is clearly diminished.
That's what we're shooting for, Mr. Mountie . . .
This is nowhere more evident than in the threads which concern themselves with separation of church and state, in which certain members assert that freedom from religion infringes upon their free exercise of religion.
Well, in that case, either the zero-sum idea is erroneous or some out-of-sight third party recently suffered significant doghousitude or weiner damage.
