I was at Singapore Zoo when they had a photo opportunity with an orang-utan and its baby. Having watched many documentaries, I was keen to try out my communication skills, especially polite introductions. Whilst waiting in line, I lowered my head, and looked her in the eyes and then at her body, and then at her baby and then I looked away for most of the time, all the while slowly moving my lips. I repeated this several times, varying the order.

When it came to my turn to have my photo taken beside her, she put her arm around me. As this is a remarkably strong animal, her keeper became alarmed and cancelled the photo session much to the annoyance of the poor orang-utan. She was led away looking over her shoulder at me, screeching her disagreement. I was the first polite man in her life, including humans and orang-utans.

I tried to explain to the keepers that it was not her fault, but they looked at me like I was mad. I only wish I knew how to communicate with people.

Our ornamental crab apple tree is full of birds -- a robin, countless redpolls, and a stunning pair of cardinals. They are feasting on the wizened apples in the snowy branches. You could say I have a bird's eye view as I am at a second floor window and they don't seem the least bothered by me.

I live on what used to be, up until 3 years ago, a dirt road. When I was younger I would do my best to try and track animals via their paw prints in the dirt. Sadly to say anything that I found was more then likely not the originator of the tracks I was following. I have for the most part of my life, lived in the country surrounded by woods or farm land for as far as I can see.

Now that I am back home, as I drive around I notice that there is a red-tailed hawk in the general area. Most days I see him in looking out over his vast landscape he calls home in a old tree that is years from ever having seen a leaf on its branches.

There is also a rather unruly Cat Bird that just doesn't seem to like his own reflection to much. He is always fighting with what he sees in the reflection of the truck window. Rather unhappy fellow.

We have a skunk family that waddles around our property at night and they are very nice about not squirting anyone. The little ones look like Swiffers .

@farmerman,
Mama Coon came back this year to have her kits on my porch roof which is overhung by the main house roof.
Everything was rolling smoothly til she decided to tear out a soffit vent and move into the main attic.

Then one night about 4 weeks ago a huge battle broke out over my bed in the middle of the night. I would guess another adult coon got into it with Mama.

Well. I had to evict them. So one day when the three of them were lounging in sight I got out the water cannon(garden hose) and started blasting. Mama got the message.She took one kit into the woods and came back for the other one.(poor thing was shivering and making that cute kit purr)
I felt like a meany but rules is rules!

@Region Philbis,
I got between a feral cat and the cat door in the laundry. Damn near lost an arm and a leg trying to grab it to get it put down. Next time I think I will politely open the door for it.
