i like my empty life just fine. i respect both christian and muslim religion. and all others, for that matter. one thing i abhor though - proselytizers and self-solicitated missionaries. same as telemarketers - they are unwelcomed and often counter-productive.
It all happened for Michael the night he shared the top bunk with... well... you know... He was a Muslim by the time the sun came up the next morning.

I used to think that way, but no longer. I confess I do not approve of organised religion, but I disapprove of some more than others. I confess not to be a bible or koran student. But a religion is nothing but a set of ideas (just a guess about the Unknowable imo), and there are some ideas that really are bad ideas. They lead people into harms way. If some African "Christians" regularly commit child abuse because they believe in possession by evil spirits, that is a Bad Idea. If Muslims really believe they are doing the Will of God by carrying out acts of terrorism, (for which they will be amply rewarded in heaven) that also is a really bad idea that they have got in their head. Furthermore, and I've heard this said many times, that Islam has nothing to do with terrorism and its just a few people "gone bad"...then I have to ask who am I to say such a person is not a true Muslim. He (or she depressingly) invokes the name of Allah. He regards himself a pious Muslim. He does all the things Muslims do. He regards himself as a Muslim. He IS a muslim. It just does not follow that his outrageous crime makes him no longer a "true" Muslim. What was he Church of England? Lutheran? Buddhist?
Sorry Dag, there is something sick in Islam that it allows violence in its name, and its time we faced up to that sad fact. Its not the people who have gone bad, its the bad religious ideas they have in their head that encourages them (not all of course) to acts of jihad in the name of Allah.
interpretations are sick. not all muslims are jihadists, mind you. there are many peaceful progressive muslims who don't do any of the things you mention. ask them what islam means for them. or what they think of extremists and proselytizers such as our poster here. i hazard to say they would say that they do disservice to islam.
you could interpret the bible (and it has been done many a time in history) in a violent, brutal, oppressive way as well.
thus i remain convinced it is the interpretation that is questionable... though i never felt lured by any organized religion.
clarification: not that i don't agree that there are many sick ideas in islam. there are. just as in any organized religion. i just don't think that islam is that much 'worse' in theory as christianity is in theory. practice is a different animal.

We've just had a special investigative committee based in the Pentagon which has been studying the Koran -- come up with the undeniable conclusion that 'jihad is the engine-room of Islam'[/i]. Jihad is a core element of Islamic teaching - and this includes violent proselytizing of the infidel 'wherever they should be found'.
Dagmaraka is obviously in PC denial about the darker side of Islam - and that's fine with me. I enjoy certain of my own delusions and 'Safe Zones' too... it's far less threatening and demanding that way. Much less compromising.
We in the West have a virulent strain of Islam developing amongst our own Western-born Muslims who find certain heroic attractions in the Medieval romanticism of an 'heroic' Osama bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
We're at war with Islam for just about every reason we fought and struggled our way out of the ignorance and brutalities of the Dark Ages.
