Community leaders say opposition has 'legitimate right' of resistance

Quote:
CAIRO, Egypt - Leaders of Iraq’s sharply divided Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis called Monday for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces in the country and said Iraq’s opposition had a “legitimate right” of resistance.

The final communique, hammered out at the end of three days of negotiations at a preparatory reconciliation conference under the auspices of the Arab League, condemned terrorism, but was a clear acknowledgment of the Sunni position that insurgents should not be labeled as terrorists if their operations do not target innocent civilians or institutions designed to provide for the welfare of Iraqi citizens.

The participants in Cairo agreed on “calling for the withdrawal of foreign troops according to a timetable, through putting in place an immediate national program to rebuild the armed forces ... control the borders and the security situation” and end terror attacks. ...MSNBC

Does this fall in line with Bush's "as Iraqis stand up, Americans will stand down" exit strategy? I also find the timing of this interesting considering Murtha's comments were made last week. I don't think Murtha directly stirred the Iraqis to request this timetable, but I do find it strange that the White House and military commanders were saying 3 or 4 more years and now the Iraqis are saying the end of 2006 - 1 year.

I don't see how Bush would be able to spin his way out of this one.

If you had read the link, you would have noticed that it says:

Iraqi leaders call for U.S. withdrawal timetable

Just to clarify: it was a conference attended by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Iraqi Shiite and Kurdish lawmakers, as well as leading Sunni politicians -
under the auspices of the Arab League.

The question is will Bush stick to his words when he said he would withdrawl American troops if asked by the new government leaders in Iraq.

Quote:
Elisabeth Bumiller, David E. Sanger and Richard W. Stevenson write in the New York Times: "President Bush said in an interview on Thursday that he would withdraw American forces from Iraq if the new government that is elected on Sunday asked him to do so, but that he expected Iraq's first democratically elected leaders would want the troops to remain as helpers, not as occupiers. . .

It is good that the Iraqis are growing more confident in their ability to defend themselves. I welcome the day they say "We can handle it..Go home".

About 3 years too late...but...

Defend themselves against whom, each other?

They can't wait for us to leave so they can commence slitting each other's throats without all that annoying outside interference.
