Fresh Air from WHYY, November 9, 2005 ยท In today's sexual politics, are women equal -- and are men even needed? That's the question New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd asks in her new book, Are Men Necessary? When Sexes Collide.

Her caustic wit and commentary has brought Dowd both praise and criticism since she became a regular columnist for the Times in 1995. While her critics often pan her writing as superficial, Dowd's fans cite her analysis of power politics and social trends.

For Dowd, Are Men Necessary? represents a new twist on that formula, as she takes stock of the state of the sexes, 40 years after the dual events of women's liberation and the sexual revolution of the 1960s.

The book also includes something that much of Dowd's other writing has lacked: details about her own life and personal views. In discussing the roles women and men play in relating to one another, the Washington-based columnist with a reputation for being intent on keeping her private life out of the public eye yields details about her own life that have usually been left out of consideration.

Her analysis of sexual politics comes after years of writing about Washington politics; Dowd began her career at The Washington Star before moving to Time magazine. After moving to The New York Times, she won a Pulitzer Prize for her commentary on the Clinton impeachment. In 2004, Dowd published Bushworld: Enter at Your Own Risk, an analysis of the workings of the Bush administration.

As soon as we find a way to harvest their sperm, they will become obsolete. Gosh, what a wonderful world it will be.

Competing with each other to impress us men is just about the only thing most of you women are interested in apart from public displays of how much you make us pay.A quick glance around the pub on Sat night is quite sufficient evidence of those.

You would all pine away to nothing without it.

I'd get a posse up if I was you to throw Ms Dowd in the river.

November 13, 2005 -- Maureen Dowd's new book has become a Weapon of Mass Disgust.
New York women are gagging at Dowd's assertions in "Are Men Necessary: When Sexes Collide" that today's women must become Barbie dolls to land husbands, and that men are not into romancing brainy, high-achieving women. She blames her own singlehood, at 53, on her smarts, killer wit and powerful post as a New York Times op-ed columnist, bemoaning that "being a maid would have enhanced my chances with men."

Other successful Big Apple women, writers and social scientists call her research flimsy and her theories far-fetched.

"I think there's a lot of annoyance at Maureen Dowd floating around," said New York City feminist critic Katie Roiphe, who wrote a scathing review on Slate.com. "The world she's writing about is virtually unrecognizable."

In Dowd's book ?- an excerpt ran in The New York Times Magazine last month ?- she uses anecdotes from friends, and fellow Times reporters, to argue that today's single women let men pay on dates ?- "if he wants another date" and that men eagerly do so "to prove their manhood."

"She relies heavily on stereotype, exaggeration and a cartoonish version of men that doesn't resemble the men I know," said Roiphe, 37, a married mother of one.

Dowd claims women who excel in the boardroom are "sabotaging their chances in the bedroom."

One fan of Dowd's column has evidence to the contrary.

Marisa Thalberg, founder and president of Executive Moms, a Manhattan-based network of more than 3,000 CEOs, lawyers and other high-level career women nationwide, said more than 90 percent of the group are married ?- and 70 percent are equal or primary breadwinners.

For these accomplished moms, men are not just necessary, but vital, said Thalberg, an advertising consultant married to a public relations exec, and pregnant with their second child: "They are the first to say, 'I couldn't have done it without a great spouse who supported me.' "

Caryl Rivers, a journalism professor at Boston University, and Rosalind Barnett, a women's studies professor at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., wrote an article for womensenews.com, saying Dowd uses "flaky research and flimsy evidence."

Dowd cites one study that found women with higher IQs less likely to be married, but does not reveal ?- if she knows ?- that the study looked at women in their 80s, not modern women, the authors said. Dowd uses another study suggesting males shy away from ambitious women, but that was based on college students ?- 17- to 19-year-old guys.

Dowd also cites a study that found high-achieving women ages 28 to 35 were less likely to be wives and mothers ?- but fails to explain the same study found that by the ages of 36 to 40, the high achievers were slightly more likely to be hitched with kids than other working women.

"Maureen Dowd obviously didn't do her homework," Rivers told The Post.

The professors name other ambitious, high-powered journalists like Diane Sawyer and Christiane Amanpour, who boast happy marriages, as well as political stars such as Elizabeth Dole, Mary Matalin and Karen Hughes.

An undisputed expert on relationships, Candace Bushnell, author of "Sex and the City," said some young women still want to marry quickly for security, but she sees many women, even in their 20s, who "make more money than their boyfriends and they don't have a problem with it ?- and the men don't either.

"I just don't buy into the idea that anyone is too old or too smart to find love," Bushnell added.

Rivers isn't very good at statistics, is she?

~~~~~~~
Dowd is a kick. She clearly adores men, and men adore her <in her real life> She's entertaining and takes no cr@p. Gotta appreciate that in anyone, male or female.
Baby Bush's dad is a personal fan of hers. The recent New York mag article on her was particularly funny when it talked about George Sr's appreciation of her.
Since when are anyone's views supposed to be universally accepted? Or does that rule only apply to women?
Once, a long time ago , I asked my wife : why are elected women at high offices so rare and inbetween?
Or to better word my question's intent:
I observed that women were the majority of people who actually voted, so I wondered why was it that women did not vote for women candidates in droves?
She told me the following:
Are you nuts? Having to deal with a president in one of her bad moods? (by this she was referring to PMS)
And besides, she continued; I wouldn't trust the b*tch ! (her own words)
So apparently, yes ; men are needed because women don't trust each other.
We'd kill each other off in no time.
I would simply hate a world without men. For the lesbians of the world, this might work. But for those of us who like a good sausage, there are plenty of things about men I'd miss.
My vote would be Maureen ("Mo") Tucker of the greatest pre-punk band of all time, the Velvet Underground.
