Thomas asked on the other thread if it was OK if he bookmarked -- ideally, it would be great if someone [like a member who is new to all of this] could go to that thread and see only the most important info (instead of what is likely to get up to, what, 50 some "bookmark"s?). You can do the "turn on email updates" thing (bottom right, under the last post), or, once Jes puts the url in the first post here, click on that every so often to see what's up.

OR you could "bookmark" by importing something informational from here (or getting some new info). (Sorry I stole the obvious one for you to do, Thomas.)

OR you can ignore me entirely. :-D Basically just want to keep that one as lean and mean as possible, but might not be practical.

I'd love to meet with everyone who will be coming into the city the week before the big gathering, but it looks like I'll probably be out of town from May 2 to May 5. I still plan on being there for the festivities, but I won't be able to meet up with anyone beforehand. Sad

Sometimes when I know someone has sore shins, I just wanna kick 'em even harder - and if they're really annoying me - I do.

~~~~~~~
(general translation - If I disagree strongly with what someone's saying, I don't hold back - here or IRL - unless they're on the other end of my paycheque. And even then, there are no guarantees. )
~~~~~~~

This is actually one of the wonderful things about real-life meets - you can follow up on an online/email discussion/debate.

<and I can harass Kicky without one of his acolytes springing up to defend him Cool >

~~~~~~
sometimes and strongly are the key words
I don't often care strongly about any online discussion. But when I do, I don't tiptoe.
There are ambulances everywhere. A good lawyer always knows where to find one.
Then it sounds like, if that's a problem, it's one that avoiding meeting people doesn't solve or prevent.
Which is not to say that I think everyone who's ever posted here is duty-bound to go -- heck, I still don't know if I'M going.
Question: if we have it at sublime's condo, what do we do about food?
I know this has come up but I don't think anything was decided.
Also, starting when and ending when?
Larger question:
Should we assume we're having it at sublime's condo, make plans accordingly, and then if someplace presents itself as being just PERFECT, shift gears?
Sounds good.
Re: food....I'd suggest pizza. This IS Chicago, after all. Who doesn't like pizza?!
Bbbbut...Authentic deep-dish Chicago-style pizza is legendary!
What other foods are typically Chicagoan? (Is that a real word?) Anything we could be reasonably certain everyone would eat?
Or hey...let's ask Occom Bill to cater! YEAH!!!!
Thanks, soz, for the new "Just the Facts Thread." Good idea, as is the one about an open computer where folks could post commentary.
Sublime's offer of his condo's meeting room is very generous, but I am concerned about the size (somewhere between 30 and 45). It seems to me that, particularly if the folks on the "Definite" list show up; and most of those on the "Probable" list come, and a certain percentage of the "Uncertains" participate, AND IF MANY OF THOSE BRING A GUEST we could have a space problem.
I may be wrong about that issue. I would suggest that those folks in the "Definite" or "Probable" category indicate here whether they would be attending with a guest (which would be great, I hasten to add). If we see a trend indicating that we are getting to capacity, we may have to revisit the location.
As I understand it, the main "official" event is Saturday brunch/lunch. Smoking permitted and clothing optional---eat your heart out Spendius.
Smoking permitted outside & at Sublime's pad, that is...
I'm a definite and I'll be on my own.
I guess it's time to see about the plane ticket and the hotel reservation, huh?
Well, in addition to deep-dish pizza, the Italian beef sandwich, brownies, saganaki, Cracker Jack, chicken vesuvio, and the Twinkie were all invented in Chicago. And the Chicago-style hot dog is justifiably legendary.
How about cheeseburger cheeseburger cheeseburger, no Coke, just Pepsi.
John Belushi's SNL skit pulled from a restaurant in Chicago. I'm gonna say The Billy Goat Tavern but I could be wrong. Supposedly, the cheeseburgers were pretty good.
Polish sausages from Maxwell St. used to be pretty well-known. Harold's Chicken. And don't forget the ribs.
Pizza Hut was founded in Wichita.
On behalf of Wichita, I humbly apologize.
No fries, cheeps!
Billy Goat Tavern
The Maxwell Street polish is still popular (just mustard and grilled onions please) as are the pork chop sandwiches in that area.
We also have great Italian Beef sammiches and of course pizza.
To wash it all down there is a great local brewery known as Goose Island.
That link also has some good info on Chicago.
