I now see that the International Hostel is rather far out - but if there are enough of us, this may not matter! Dorm parties...?

If we can get 4 more ladies to share a dorm at the HI, that would be OK, I don't really mind if you don't!!!

You ladies are entirely more adventurous than I am. I'm afraid I'll be looking for a private room & bath. I still hope to get some of us in the same hotel. That one more drink in the bar routine sounded perfect.

Thomas, thanks for the updated list.

I feel the same way, mac. A hostel is not for me. I'm looking for something close to the Art Institute (a must see for me) around 3 stars. What are you looking for?

Yep, 3 stars sounds about right. I haven't looked too closely into location yet, but the Art Institute is a must-see for me too.

Mr B mentioned the possibility of Jazz Fest falling through this year and if so, taking a trip to VA instead. I mentioned the probability of Jazz Fest being relocated, if not held in NO, and the possibility of Mr and Mrs B staying home that weekend and going to VA a different weekend.

I'm still a probably not, but the seed has been planted...

Don't be overly concerned about location. No hotel will be located within walking distance of everything that you might want to see in Chicago. Unless you are an indefatigable hiker, you'll need to catch a cab or ride public transportation at some point in your visit. The good thing, though, is that most destinations are easily accessible by these means. Even if your hotel is near O'Hare, as long as you're close to an el line you are close to everything.

Okay. And how can I know what hotels are close to an "el" stop?

The website will usually say "close to transportation."

Here's a schematic of the Chicago el/subway system. A full CTA transit system map shows bus lines as well.

If you go to Chicago you might as well stay near the miracle mile and Michigan Avenue. I'd suggest a meeting place of the Rock Bottom Brewery, in the River North area, if it's still there. Easy walking distance from Michigan Ave., lots of other bars and restaurants and entertainment in the area. Place has a full bar and decent food, pool tables, etc.

joe, Good map on public transportation in Chicago. I made a hard copy - just in case, although I think taxi will be my main mode of transportation most times.

Adding this map from the set of maps on page 4 of this thread, in case it helps...

It's not the "miracle mile," it's the "magnificent mile."

A word of warning: a lot of maps of downtown Chicago show Couch, Court, Calhoun, Marble, and Arcade places as east-west streets. They are, however, streets in name only: they're actually just alleys.

Gosh, these maps are making me homesick. My last apartment in Chicago was a loftspace on Plymouth Court between W. Harrison and Polk Streets, right across from the Hilton Chicago. I watched parts of the filming of "The Fugitive" from my window. sniff sniff

Going to be phtographed for my new passport (the first passport since more than 20 years) and driving licence (since nearly 30 years a new one again: 'lost' my first [alcohol]).
Both according to new US immigration laws and in EU-look.

However, by now I've doubts, if the US will led me in: talked with my sister-in-law's husband this weekend. He visited recently the US, making some dozens speeches at various IT firms across the country.
He was hold back and questioned about his relations to Russia when entering because of .... his doctor thesis, which was about the conception of a wellknown German author in the USSR [German-Russian literature connections]. [He's head of the computer/data center of one of Europe's largest insurence companies.]

Shocked

Interesting and impressive, that the US immigration officers can discuss details of dodgy doctorate theses with iffy foreigners.

Is it safe for a woman traveling alone to use the subway and/or "el" in Chicago...especially if she doesn't know her way around?

I'm trying to decide whether to plan on that or take cabs.
