Dag, I think you and I are looking for the same place. Except I would add free shuttle service to & from O'Hare. And fresh flowers in the room. And a chocolate on my pillow every evening would be a nice touch.

Not too much to ask, do you think? Wink

Well then. You, Clary, and I should go for the same hotel. That way we can always get together for a Kapurkova (proverbial 'one last drink' in this part of the world) at the hotel bar and chat until we fall off the bar stools...

The Essex Inn looks really nice, but the price is a bit steep for me. Will continue to look at the options.

I would suggest we revisit--perhaps not right now, but at some point--the "plans" for the weekend. My understanding is that some folks will be arriving on Thursday and some on Friday and will be departing on Sunday or Monday. It seems to me that we agreed that the only scheduled event would be, perhaps, a brunch on Saturday where we would all be in the same place at the same time. It would be at a time that would leave the rest of the day available for exploration. On Friday, the rest of Saturday and Sunday, folks would be on their own to band together in groups of their own choice to go where they want to go and do what they want to do (I feel a song coming on). And brunch, with a target price of say $30 (a number we talked about, I think) is a number we could advertise as being the only cost. If someone wants to come from some nearby place; join us for the one event and then go home, that is the only cost. Nuch cheaper than a fancy dinner, somewhere. Am I correct so far?

As for Sublime's offer of his place's clubhouse. It is a total crapshoot when it comes to how many folks will show up, but applying a little bit of probability theory:
Nine people said "Yes, difinitely" ................................................. = 9
Thirteen said "Probably" - 70% of them will actually show up ........ = 9
Twenty-Eight said "I'd like to" 30% will do so .............................. = 9
No one has mentioned whether they are bringing a guest ............. = 9
That spongy analysis seems to suggest that we could be up to the mid-thirties.

$35 for single room with shared bathroom in the International Hostel. That would suit me but may be too primitive for some... It has a downtown location and a pretty good review.

The thread has gotten a bit long. Will most of the group action be on the North or South side of the River? There are attractions in both areas and good options for hotels in each - but I can't easily tell where most of the interest here lies.

That sounds wonderful! I would love that.

I took a quick look at Walter's Essex. It looks nice, and the rate seems moderate for downtown Chicago. Will check out others, too.

If I am to come, I will have to get a very good trip planned for the rest of May; I have some friends to visit in Oregon, and I'd like to get an Amtrak ticket for 30 days. But if hotel prices are normally $70 min for a 2* hotel, I may not be able to afford to come at all... The hostel in Chicago seems the sort of price I need, $35 but I would like to be with you all, drinking and falling off bar stools!!

Clary, you should come to Boston for sure and stay with I and littlek as part of your May trip!

I think $70 is a price of hotels within cities.
Best Western is $61 a night, but that's near the airport. Then again, there's a subway to town from the airport.

hmm, looked into hostels in chicago...there ain't none where you could get a private room under $55 or so - they make you pay for two beds per night...

This hotel is listed at about $100. a night on this link. However, I booked a round trip flight and four nights at this hotel in a combo package through Expedia.com and got a good deal.

Clary, consider Antrak to Albuquerque afterwards..
(I'm bound to have a small house by May...). The southwest is very much worth seeing/experiencing.
