As Osso and I think J_B indicated, she personally probably wanted to hire you but it might not be as simple as what she wanted. Liability issues have been mentioned, also I know there are strict requirements for accredation -- if they are an accredited daycare they may have risked losing their accredation if they had an employee with your background.
Still, it sucks.

I'm thinking the same as osso...she probably had to get someone else's approval. When it comes to churches, they ALWAYS have to get someone else's approval. No one can act alone, especially when it comes to children's programs. And I'm betting the higher-ups have a no-tolerance policy on criminal backgrounds. That's always been the case in churches I know. Even though, as in this case, it's not always fair. Too many parents demand it, though.
I've been in similar positions as her before. I bet she's very disappointed she can't hire you, and THAT's why she told you quickly over the phone. She's undoubtedly uncomfortable about the decision. It's not often you find someone as qualified and willing as you were, and I'm sure she knows that.
Give her the benefit of the doubt, shewolf. I don't think it was her decision.

Shewolf, Pretend your a employer checking references on yourself or have your husband do it. And see what these potential employers are being told by your references. Also make your last emplorer a fake one. For example give a phone number of a freind or relative but list them as the last company you worked for. Have that freind/relative change there outgoing message to match the fake company. Also have them answer the phone like "Acme house keeping may we help you". then " Oh, Shewolf she is a great employ never late, hard working, we hate to lose her but were going bankrupt". IT WORKS. Amigo is an old hustler. It has worked for me and my freinds many times. Do this before you apply for your next job. You seem like to nice of a person to be in this situation. So cry what you need to cry and get started on fixing this bulls**t. Also check what legal backround check employers might be doing that is producing something bad about you. there are ways to fix that to. You have to know what these potential employers are hearing about you that gives them a red flag not to hire you. I'ts vital. I'm looking for a new job too. We can exchange notes. Little people have to stick together. Now dry your eyes, regroup and hit the drawing board. God is on your side and so are we.

Also shewolf call back the last employer (Be very polite and professional) and ask them if they can tell you what negitive information came back to them so as to assist you in your ongoing job search. Appeal to there kind nature and tell them you have a child to take care of and this information will be invaluable to your job search and any other advice they can give you. Sometimes you just have to sit down and rethink things and options. Recognize obsticals and get rid of the before you start running in circles again. No offence shewolf but what about your physical appearance maybe there seeing something they don't like. find out why your not being hired and correct it. It could be somthing very simple. You could apply for a hundred jobs and not get one if you don't find out what is turning employees of to you. Maybe someone who owns a company on A2K will say you worked for them in there state or yours. I think you will get on the right track once you breath new life into your job search and get a job search overhaul.
