Democrats: Still Not a Great Alternative to the GOP

While the GOP has been slipping, I'm afraid the Democrats have lost their chance for serious self evaluation and reflection. I found myself nodding while reading the below article, particularly with respect to the disparaging comments made about the MoveOn & Daily Kos crowd. The Democratic Party has molded itself into a party of mindless reactionaries rather than a party of new ideas. The Justice Miers nomination provides only the most recent example: While the right argues, the left just looks dumbfounded, as if Democrats cannot possibly take a stance on Ms. Miers before the GOP makes up its mind.

A large percentage of the population of the United States is partyless but politically active (including me!). It isn't because we don't have strong opinions on the issues. It's because both parties have continuously disappointed us. Who will win the independents in 2006 and 2008?
