After losing bet, lawmaker to run nude through streets
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ?- A Green Party lawmaker who pledged to run naked through the streets if a rival party leader was re-elected said he will honor his word.
Legislator Keith Locke, the Green Party's foreign affairs spokesman, said Monday he didn't want to break an election promise.

He had said he would do the nude dash if rightist Act Party leader Rodney Hide won a parliamentary seat in the Aukland suburb of Epsom. Regarded as an outside chance, Hide romped home in the contest Saturday with a 3,200-vote majority.

"We haven't set a date, we've got preparations to do in terms of choreography," Locke said. "It will be artistic and it will involve body paint."

A local business group, the Newmarket Business Association, is helping pave the way for the lawmaker's run down Broadway, which is "a straight and wide strip ?- ideal for such exposure," said Cameron Brewer, the group's general manager.

"When Mr. Locke is ready, the ... association will warn the faint-hearted, clear the footpath on Broadway ... ensure there are the necessary officials, and provide a much-needed loincloth," Brewer said.

This may be a personal choice; however, I myself would rather see Mr. Hide run through the streets in his all-together. Much more the appealing sort than Mr. Locke. Shocked

Now that I think on it, maybe I would be better off not seeing either of them this way, the body paint just covers over the issues.

Isn't it significant that it's the loser who is keeping his campaign promises? We have no idea whether the winner will keep his. That's somewhat analogous to the current situation in the USA -- the losers are often more trustworthy than the ones we chose to elect for some reason.

It's always easy to be honest once you have lost. The promises are smaller and involve less political interaction. This is similar to past political leaders and election losers who can (and will) point out the failures of whoever is in charge at the time. Answers are easy to have when there is nobody to really respond to. It would be much more interesting if there were a way in which we could have two alternate timelines...one in which Hide rules and one in which Locke rules. In those circumstances one could find out how each man really reacted in genuine circumstances when life was truly set before them and needed to be orchestrated in a manner in which the best possible outcome for all was the goal.
