'Special security task'
An Iraqi official, who spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity, said the soldiers' arrests stemmed from an incident earlier in the day.
The official said two unknown gunmen in full Arabic dress began firing on civilians in central Basra, wounding several, including a traffic police officer. There were no fatalities, the official said.
The two gunmen fled the scene but were captured and taken in for questioning, admitting they were British Marines carrying out a "special security task," the official said.

they were an assassination team
There sure a lot of conflicting reports of this story. On the US AND THEM: US, UN & Iraq, version 8.0 there has been links posted from different sources all with different slants and accounts of this incident.
But all in all, it is a weird thing for two British officers or whatever to dress up in traditional Arabic dress and have all those weapons and things. I wonder what their mission was.
I read some reports which stated they were SAS. Intelligence is a specialisation of the SAS so it was likely they were gathering intelligence on something or someone.
The news here tonight said that the Brits have been training Iraqi police, and their intelligence says that they (the Iraqi police) have been thoroughly infiltrated by insurgents.
What were trying to train the police to do, set up antitank missles?

as i said in my earlier post...they were after parties unknown... simple servilience was unlikely. while they were likely tracking someone, it was to kill them, not to offer them tea and scones.
Poisoned tea and scones?
