Why American Car Companies Suck

Reply Sat 17 Sep, 2005 09:56 am
Chevy just released the HHR. An obvious knock-off of the Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Good job, Chevy. Too bad Chrysler can't even give the PT's away anymore.

I mean, I'm all for equal employment opportunities, but why are they letting the severely mentally handicapped run American car companies?

That thing is f'n terrible.

and.. have you seen the advertised gas mileage?
Chevy is claiming this is thier " best"
something like.. 20 per city? 26 per highway?

They are smearing those numbers in consumers faces in hopes that they will eat it up thinking that they are going to save in the long run on gas prices.
uh.. i hate ford, but you can buy a focus and get better gas mileage then that.
You can buy a toyota and get a car whose life span is almost 250,000 with basic care
you can buy a honda and get a hybrid, 2000 cash back on taxes for doing so as well..

and both of those are original body styles.. Confused

My point is they've obviously run out of ideas. They're so un-f'n-original, they have to copy another car that doesn't even sell.

Retards.

The Aztec is an abortion.

Actually I can't say all American cars suck. Last night I fell in love.

Drove my friend's 2004 Pontiac GTO. 6-speed, 350 horsepower Corvette engine, 0-60 in 5.3 seconds..and it doesn't have the usual Pontiac interior, it was actually very well done.

I want one.

It's not flashy at all, but I kind of like that about it. People will have no idea what just blew by them so fast.

Yes, that's the new thing. Instead of 5-speed manuals, many sports cars and "sporty" cars have 6-speeds. Another gear allows for closer gear ratios.

HERE is a nice article about the
technology or rather lack of technology of cars.

closer gear rations make for weaker transmissions, no?

That guy's an idiot.

For one, the Dasher had around 70 horsepower compared to his Audi's TWO-HUNDRED.

"This Dasher was good for 0-100KM/h in 12 seconds with a top speed of 105 MPH. Getting 23.5 MPG it was pretty economical too."
http://www.vosaclub.org/passathistory.html

So let's break it down:

Audi A3: 200 horsepower, 30mpg.

VW Dasher: 75 horsepower, 23mpg.

I'd say there's a slight progression in technology there.

Not that I know of. I don't think it would affect the transmission.

How do you figure?

It just makes each gear "shorter," supposedly improving performance.

Slappy, I thought it had something to do with the walls of the inner workings of the transmission being thinner. But, it's something I remember from high school some 20 years ago.

Littlek....in the words of you, "what?"

Many cars are using 6-speeds now. Back in 60's they were mostly 4-speeds. I haven't heard anything about it compromising reliability.

BMW's new M5 is a 7-speed, I believe.

I dunno..... I used to date a guy who's father raced street cars. My boyfriend always did his own engine work and later became a machinist. I guess it was something he once told me.

7 speed?
can i wipe my drool .... mmmmm

the other day, actually about amonth ago, I was in this restaurant with Mr and outside the window was an Aztec. >shudder< it made my food taste bad looking at that horrid excuse for a van/suv/whatever.
The nerd behind me was saying that it was the fastest selling pontiac to hit the market in 10 years.

I choked..

he couldnt be serious..

He went on to tell his buddies that they have stopped production due to ' over whelming responce' and he projected that they will be collecters items.. Shocked

so, i turned in my seat and said '
No. They stopped production after the first year due to lack of sales and consumer complaint.
At that point in time there was only 11,000 sold nation wide. Due to an overwhelming complaint of 21 seperate engine malfunctions before 50,000 miles people were pissed. The design was not accepted by the general public and it became a drain in funds . Its reputation is ****, and it procedes it. With their reliability , it wouldnt last you the trip home . They have set out thier " revamped version' with in a year and a half and now they only trickle off the lot. Collectors cars? No way."

i think i pissed him off..
even worse, I think he was the owner of that..

thing..

Overwhelming response to what? People throwing eggs at them? That guy is a tool and he deserved a good verbal thrashing by you.

By the way, how the hell did you know the sales numbers off the top of your head? You're like the chick from "My Cousin Vinny."

She made the up and waited to see if he swallowed it. He did. Anybody believes they shut down a production run because sales are too strong is going to believe anything.

Honda Element looks like a cross between the Aztec and a Hummer.
