There is a show about the life of John Lennon that is currently on Broadway. I've heard it's good. Anyone seen it? What did you think?
Ummm...."Lennon" (no, really, that's what it's called!)
Oh. Okay. And no I have not seen it...had not even heard about it. A musical or drama?
The show is called Lennon. It opened last month to mediocre reviews. I've only read about it, haven't been to NY in ages.
It's a drama, Sturgis, but I don't know if they play any of Lennon's music or not.
Do you know, mac11? I would think they would play a few of his songs -- or is it just a straight bio of his life?
It had a lot of his songs, I think.
Here's
the NY Times review summary for Lennon - I couldn't get to the full review for some reason. (Posting here because you have to register to view it.)
Quote:In the immortal words of Yoko Ono, "Aieeeee!" A fierce primal scream - of the kind Ms. Ono is famous for as a performance and recording artist - is surely the healthiest response to the agony of "Lennon," the jerry-built musical shrine that opened last night at the Broadhurst Theater. The title character of "Lennon" is, of course, John Lennon, the onetime Beatle and Ms. Ono's artistic collaborator and husband, who died nearly 25 years ago. Biographies of Lennon indicate that he was a man of corrosive intelligence and overflowing creativity. This drippy version of his life, written and directed with equal clunkiness by Don Scardino and featuring a Muzak-alized assortment of Lennon's non-"Beatles" songs, suggests that he was just a little lost boy looking for love in all the wrong places until he found Ms. Ono and discovered his inner adult. "Lennon" is the latest in the bland crop of shows known as jukebox musicals that have been spreading over Broadway like kudzu, from the mega-hit "Mamma Mia!" (the Abba musical) to the super-flop "Good Vibrations" (Beach Boys). "Lennon" fits the jukebox mold, with its regulation lineup of perky, puppyish performers and brimming quota of recognizable songs, delivered with lots of volume and little dancing. ?- Ben Brantley
Thanks, mac11! I guess I'll pass on the show.
It's a shame because Lennon had an interesting life -- could've been a great show. Too bad they junked it up!
I've heard the next "big musical" coming up will be based on the life of ....are you ready....Franki Valli. Yep. They're saying it's going to be bigger than Mamma Mia. Whatever!
