You know the lowest selling items on their menu are their " healthy" choices?

I'm sure they wouldn't make as much money selling the fast-fryed items, but I'm betting it could still be worth their while. If it were not so, why did they (and other food establishments) introduce "healthier items" to their respective menus?

.

I think it is all about appearance.
When you are McDonalds, and have something like SuperSize ME flung at you , you have to counteract. Espically when you can not deny that the food you serve is crap..
So, to balance the act of being healthy and " with the health craze" they market a few items like CRAZY and attract attention to those items before they spend money advertising their Big Macs .
Big Macs and other MCdonalds items are so engrained into american society they can be found in the dictionary.. so who needs to worry about marketing those?
Laughing
Make yourself look better, rely on the habitual purchases of your established items to take care of themselves for a while and put your healthiest face forward.. until people forget . ;-)

BUT- thats just my opinion on the " healthy items"

The blame really should be placed on the shoulders of the person(s) who allowed them in the door without making stipulations about what they would be allowed to serve. If McDonald's couldn't live with that, that would have settled this business right then and there.

I absolutly agree with that statement..
and

i am willing to bet that McDonalds is offering the hospital a pretty penny to rent there. Hospitals suffering as they do from diminished donations for charity work/er help need the money.
What are they to do? Hospitals do NOT have the authority to say no. It is up to the city, or who ever funds the building the hospital is in. And if the hospital is in need, and an established company like McDonalds is offering...im not surprised they were not told NO. Confused

Most hospitals these days, and those clinics not independently founded by physicians, are owned by corporations, such as the Hospital Corporation of America. The days of small, locally owned and city owned hospitals is long over. Those which survive are anomalies, and are often on financial life-support.

Perhaps in the future, you'll be seeing sporting goods stores where doctors will be able to purchase designer golf clubs and shoes for their next day off--and who knows, if they really need financial life support, maybe even a hospital casino too.

I've worked as the employee of a contractor in some of the local hospitals. Ohio Health, which describes itself as a not-for-profit charitable organizaiton, owns most of the hospitals in the Columbus, Ohio area. There are "coffee stands" by outside vendors, but no franchises such as this (not, at any event, when last i visited any of their many facilities). The Ohio State University Medical Center, which has begun to expand, and to acquire other properties, buying two other hospitals, and turning one of them into an outpatient specialty clinic, has a Wendy's franchise at its main facility, as well as one of the franchise "coffee stands."

I rather suspect that corporate or not-for-profit, the lure of corporate franchise money is hard to resist.

Don't blame the doctors, Tia. They are victims of the corporate system. Just like the rest of us.

I'm not a McDonald's supporter by any means, but in all fairness, all the big fast food chains are doing this "healthy choice" stuff.

You've got Wendy's, Burger King, Subway, etc, all have added things like salads and lower fat items. If one was serious about one's weight, one would not eat out at any restaurant, "fast" or otherwise.

While I would agree that the above restaurants all wish to appear to be "doing the right thing", I think it's a bit more than just appearance. Times have changed, people's food choices have somewhat changed, and they need to catch up. As a matter of fact, wasn't McDonald's amongst the last of the big chains to make this change? I think people like Wendy's were doing salads long before they were.

Simply in the interest of fairness, and not because i have any corporate involvement, Subway has always had an emphasis on low-fat food. Their cold-cuts are made with turkey, and they've long advertised the amount of fat in any given sandwich. However, that might be understandable in light of something i learned years ago when i first visited one of their franchises, and as i usually do in such a case, read the fine print. And this is very much to the point of this thread. As one can find out by visiting the Subway website, SUBWAY is a registered trademark of Doctor's Associates Inc.

I first saw a Subway store about 17, 18 years ago, went in, and walked around peering at all the posters and notices while awaiting my sammich. I tend to read the fine print on everything, and i remembered reading about Doctor's Associates at that time.

Maybe and maybe not.
I still think it was just a half assed attempt at covering up the damage that supersize me did to them.
It was a way to clean off the mud that was slung at them and an answer to their customers " why not?" questions.
I dont think there is enough behind it to make it a profitable marketing choice.

And then again, they may really run with the healthier choice foods and make it a staple in their menu items .
Who knows?
Not me.. Laughing that is why I dont eat there. hehe

I don't think many people go to fast food places specifically for the healthy stuff. (Who knows, maybe they do.) I'd thought the main purpose was for family sorts of situations -- kids want to go, mom doesn't want to have a quarter pounder or whatever, they say but you can have the healthy stuff (whatever it may be), she's more willing to go.

The marketing directly to kids is a whole 'nother issue...

Going back to Brandon's post about the documentary "Supersize Me" could have something to do with that timing about healthy choices in food. That documentary was such an eye opener and I haven't had McDonald's since. Actually, I haven't had any "fast food" in ages and ages and ages.

I know it has its place. I just choose not to partake anymore.

I'm appalled. You used an unnecessary modifier (really) to modify another unnecessary modifier (really) to modify a strong word (disgusting). Your extensive use of unnecessary word modification had the net effect of weakening, rather than strengthening, the force of your message.

I'm appalled. I'm really, really appalled.
