Cat pee

I have a large Geode piece ( about 1 1/2 foot long) that is very delicate.
Some small shards are beginning to break off.
I had this stored in the garage wrapped in a small rug put inside of a large plant pot to keep it from getting knocked around.

I went to take it out the other day and dust it so I could display it.

HOLY COW.

some cat pissed in it. We leave the garage open most of the weekend days because of yard work. No doubt it got in like that. Crying or Very sad
now my beautiful stone smells awful.

I have washed it with water, left it in the sun, used my fingers and dish soap and NOTHING.. it still smells awful.
I don't know what to do at this moment?
Will a harsh cleaner hurt the stone?
What gets the cat pee smell out of things? Baking soda?
>sigh<

vinegar?

The cleaner I use on the cat and rabbit pee around the house is Kids n Pets (or some such cutesy spelling) and it works pretty well on the odor, as long as the stain's fresh. It's also not tested on animals and not too harsh.

the smell ISNT fresh..
after washing the stone, I could tell exactly where the cat peed on it.

do you think that product will still work on an old stain?

actually, i shouldnt use the word stain because there is no actual 'stain' on the stone. The carpet got most of the urine. It is just the smell.

Nature's Miracle works for dog urine in rugs.

See:

How long did you leave it in the sun and air?

You obviously were Double XX'd by the Baddest Tomcat in the neighborhood.

Those two products are very similar. Kids n Pets, tho, is about half the price and available in my supermarket, while I have to make a trip to PetSmart for the Nature's Miracle.

I have gotten smells out of things using Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap. It's a liquid castile soap with a strong dose of peppermint oil. You might try that -- dilute it and rinse the stone well.

Look in the Phone Directory under Janitorial Supplies. They will have something with enzymes in it that eat the urine.

Mix it with water, because the water activates it. And spray it on. Should be gentle enough to use on just about anything.

After some time, and I don't know how long that time is, but then the urine crystallizes and has changed chemically, and then you need vinegar.

Personally, I would try both.

I have gone down the suggestions slowly and my rock still smells.
I have sprayed it with vinegar and just a LITTLE water.
That has helped a TAD, but not completely..

Did you use the "special" products? Pee needs to be neutralized and not just covered up.

this pee is OLD.

the only thing I can think of, is that there are cracks I cant see that it has settled in..

I dont think the stone has "absorbed" the urine..
i think it is just caked on..
make sense?

Maybe it's not pee.

Maybe it's mold from humidity in the carpet that was wrapped around the item.

shewolf....

This is worth a shot. It gets skunk odor out, I know that and skunk odor is one of the hardest.

Take a large plastic bin, large enough to hold the geode if you can find one. Mix 1/4 cup Dawn Dishwashing Liquid, 16 ounces of white vinegar and 1 pound of baking soda together in a separate bowl and when mixed, rub the mixture into the geode where the smells are and let sit for 30 minutes to one hour.

Rinse the geode well with warm water and let dry naturally in the sun.

Let me know how it works...if it works.

I wish you luck. Having a wonderful piece like that, you definitely don't want it destroyed by some vengeful cat. Sad

It IS gorgeous! And it sure would look lovely in my house! Smile

You're right though...cat pee does sort of crystallize and it could be in the nooks and crannies that you haven't been able to reach yet. Between those tiny places of crystals already in the geode, it would be hard to even fathom where the pee in its liquid state ever seeped. Sad

That's why I suggested letting the mixture I mentioned set for awhile. I will swear it works on skunk odor and with any luck at all, it just may work on the geode. Hopefully it is just getting the right combination of ingredients to work without harming the stone.

The geode crystals may be porous enough to absorb some of the pee. Concrete is and does, for example.

The scent in cat pee is an enzyme that is damnably hard to get rid of.

Could you paint over the affected area with clear nail polish? That should seal the scent in.

if you look on the top picture, the right hand side, where the brighest part is?
that whole end is where the urine smell is coming from.
I didnt think the stone could actually absorb the urine..This is heart breaking. :-(
there are TONS and TONS of little cracks in it.
some all the way to the bottom of the stone.

i think, the only possible answer is to make the solution you suggested LJ and soak it for a day or so. I will have to sort of ' knock the stone around' under the water to make sure that all the air bubbles are gone. That could be why nothing else has worked. I cant see all of the cracks with out a magnifying glass.. >sigh<

then.. im going to buy a gallon of clear nail polish.

ITS GONE!!

the smell.. is GONE

I could dance naked in the middle of 6th street im so happy.
but ill save the world the pain and keep my clothes on. Shocked

what I ended up doing :

vinegar, off and on for several days. I have no CLUE how many though... But it was something like -
1 day soaked in vinegar, next day scrubbed with baking soda and some pet odor cleaner.
then a few days later , more vinegar, then more scrubbing.

after almost 2 months of this.
my pretty stone is finally NORMAL.
yipppppeeeee
