Just rereading the posts - I always knew I wasn't alone, but it's nice to see others that don't always "fit in the mold" in some way......

drilling math into someone?

Is that like drilling relegion into someone?
Or drilling someone to behave a certain way, OR ELSE!
Is it akin to having your teeth drilled?

I just don't believe things have to be "drilled" into someone.
I though of music for a moment, but no, not even there, all those hours of practice is just training your body to release what in your head and heart, it's already there.

My mother started to use flash cards with me with reading, but soon stopped because I didn't need it.
For instance learning there, their and they're, she just explained ONCE that:
you know the word here, so that is there
you know what an heir is, so that is their, and so on.

I UNDERSTOOD, so I didn't have to REPEAT.

drilling is not learning, drilling is learning to parrot something meaningless to you back to whoever is doing the drilling.

Understanding is the result of learning..

I would suggest a tutor -- they always know the most update tricks to helping kids learn subjects especially math. There are so many helpful things that I used when I was a kid
