In the early 20th century, persons wishing to enter the U.S. were required to first arrive at Ellis Island.
At Ellis Island, they were examined.
Then most were allowed to enter the mainland U.S.
A few were detained at Ellis Island or possibly sent back to their home country.
Why can't we use a similar procedure today with immigrants to the U.S?
People fear monger and politicize it for their own political gain. In large part it's because they don't want a dark skinned majority having more voting power than whites.
@gollum,
Because we don't have an open immigration policy anymore. If we had open immigration, we could do that.
Ellis Island (for those who would like a picture to go with the name)
Ellis Island still exists ... there are rumors that the immigration center there has been moved to another (secret) location.
