im more than likley going to move illinois early next year and im wondering if it is possible for me to secure a job in illinois before i move there. like would it be possible for me to apply with a company and then maybe do on over the fone interview? i was thinking of trying to get a job with UPS but i dont know if they do that kind of thing, can anyone give me some input on this? thanks
go to your local UPS station, or contact the employment office, ask about employment, tell them you are moving to illnois and are looking to step into a job there.
most lage companies that hire from out of state will actually provide room and board for an interview if they like your resume enough. if you decide to try a more officey line of work.
you can try online, looking at the classified of local new papers, and submitting resumes that way. but at some point you should take a few days and visit where your moving, and schedule all your interviews for that time.
well since it is likley that i wont be moving for about 6 months (late jan, late feb), when do you think that i should start trying to persue a job in illinois, or attempt to schedule interviews?
Wait, now I'M interested. I was thinking of looking for a job out of state soon, AND I was thinking of applying at UPS. Are you my doppelganger?
What kind of job were you thinking of applying for at UPS? It really depends on the kind of job you are going for whether it is even feasible to look for work out of state.
well i was going to apply for maybe a delivery truck driver, or a package handler, or something, but i would take any job they offered me. also, i was thinking that i could maybe join a temp agency of some sort, so that maybe they could help me find a job. would it be possible to get a temp agency to help me find a job before i moved?
Well, I don't really know how UPS does things, but for the kind of job you're looking for, I would say that the only way to really do it is to move there first. I'm pretty sure a phone interview is not going to get it done in this situation.
If you know somebody who lives where you are going, you might be able to use their home address and phone number to "fool" potential employers into thinking you live there already, but if you do that, you will have to be ready on a couple days' notice to fly there for an interview. It's not worth the hassle or the money you'll end up wasting on travel.
My advice is to get the yellow pages for the place you are moving and start calling temp agencies. Ask them as many questions as you can think of, and gather information. Send them your resume and register with them by fax or online if you can.
Then, just move there with your six months' worth of living expenses (you do have six months of living expenses don't you?). Once you're there, find a cheap place to stay, and get whatever piddly job you can find as soon as possible so that you have some money coming in. Then, start looking for your "real" job from there.
I've moved out of state without a job a couple times, and this is the best way, in my opinion. Hope that helps.
well i dont know if ill have 6 months worth of living expenses saved by them time i move to illinois, but i know ill have a couple of months worth of money to live off of untill i get a job (which hopefully wont take to long). but do you think temp agencies will let me register with them like a month before i move up to illinois?
I only know about this because I have a relative who was trying to get a job with UPS or FedEx. It is very competitive. Many people want to work for these companies because the pay is good, benefits are great and you don't need an MBA to get hired. Basically, you just need to be literate, have a safe driving history with a CDL license and know how to be polite to customers. However, you will be checkd out like you were applying for the FBI. Drug tests, psychology tests (they want to know how honest you are), background checks, etc. For every opening they have dozens of people applying. Sorry if I'm busting any bubbles.
no, ur not busting my bubble at all, actually your kind of giving me a heads up. but im wondering if there arn't any other types of jobs i could get with UPS. but i wonder if an temp agency can get me a job where i make atleast 10/hr. seeing as i dont think ill need to make much more than that when i first start out because where i plan to move, the cost of living isn't very high.
so do you think if i register with an employment or temp agency, that they will be able to get me job by the time i move to illinios? ive never dealt with a temp agency, do they charge for their services?
i do know that UPS likes to promote from within. generally you have to start as an over night loader, loading the trucks for the drivers for the next day. this is part time work so no benefits. after that , you have to hope that some one retires, quits, or they open a new route. i had a guy who used to work for me-he was trying to do just that. he worked for ups overnight 12am-4am then came to work for me at 6am until 3pm (we were his full time job). he worked like for three years and then finally got a route.
as far as temp agencies go, generally you have to work for them for a minimum amount of time, generally around 200 hours i think it is (5 weeks). they make money by charging the company $15 and hour and paying you $8. if you get placed with a company that happens to have a full time opening, they have the option to offer it to you if they like your work, but you have to work the full time that you committed to them.
i suggest writing a resume, then searching online at hotjobs or monster or career builder for a job in illinois and then applying to those that you like and are commensurate with your experience/education.
Good luck!! finding a job is always a little tough. if you are looking for an hourly job (as opposed to one with a set salary) employmentguide.com specializes in that, otherwise don't bother with them.
oo, i wouldnt mind working overnight loading trucks, that is as long as the pay is decent. but while im working for the temp agency, do i get paid or do i just work off those 200 hours for free? and do you think that they would "accept me" like a month or less before i moved to illinois?
Why don't you google 'employment agencies' and the name of the state and city you are moving to, look at the sites that come up, and inquire from them, either by phone or email?
