TV Commercials that Stink

I never watched Magnum at all, not a single episode. I mostly watched Selleck in westerns. As I said on another thread, I compartmentalize these things. I may dislike Selleck and John Wayne as persons, but I still like some of their work. The same might be said of many artists, actors and even politicians.

@izzythepush,
Americans stink when it comes to British accents. We can't seem to distinguish one from another.

True.

Which makes it so mystifying that Brits and Australians are so adept at doing an American accent.

For one thing you can't know the personal stories and the character of everyone that you admire and in some way follow. You could spend an entire lifetime admiring a murderer, rapist, or whatever, and never know.

I can do that with some entertainers - I mean, compartmentalize my feelings and still appreciate what they do.

Some though - like Jon Voight - say such sick, Trump -like things that I can never look at them the same way after. That’s just me.

Of course, speaking American is a lot easier for a Brit than speaking English is for an American. The practice session for American is a snap.

He’s An Englishman Doing An American Accent
(By Me)

He’s an Englishman
Doing an American accent.
Which means he’s gonna use “gonna” a lot.

And he’s gonna use “wanna” every bit as much.
“Gotta” will be working overtime, too,
As will the double negatives.

If you are an Englishman
Who wants to do an American accent,
A great sentence to practice would be:

“I don’t wanna be no party pooper,
But I gotta be home by 10,
So I’m gonna leave now.”

@glitterbag,
He did this sort of generic accent that couldn’t be anchored to anywhere. The successful accents are from somewhere. Densely Washington is very convincing in For Queen and Country because he had a Tottenham accent. He spent time in that part of London hanging out with the locals and listening to how they spoke before filming started.

Domino's Pizza commercials irritate me with with their silly offers. I.E. If you drop your pizza we will replace it", "If a pot hole is in the way when your heading out for pizza, call us, we will have it filled in for you", and the current one "we have robot unmanned cars that will deliver your pizza to you"......Yea, more jobs lost, terrific.

Most of the time I can disengage my mind from the TV during the commercials. My wife at times comments on one or asks my opinion of something in one and I have no idea what she is talking about.

@edgarblythe,
The commercial breaks last so long now, some almost 5 minutes, I forget what I am watching. The upside is when the commercials start I can hit pause, unload the dishwasher or start a load of laundry, come back fast forward over the commerials and watch the next 4 to 5 minutes until the commercials resume, then repeat.

@glitterbag,
When I watched Catch 22 on Roku they interrupted at exact ten-minute intervals with four commercials. Maddening.

@glitterbag,
Do they fill the potholes with pizza? That’s amazing!

@Ragman,
Well, that would be a novel idea. It just struck me as such a stretch, what do they really want to sell?? Pizza or asphalt?

Hey everybody!!! Let's get a pizza!!!
Response: Great idea, call Domino's, they do a great job filling pot holes>
One more response: Oh!! Sounds absolutely yummy, Domino's it is.

The Go Compare adverts have been going since 2009. They feature an opera singer with a ridiculous oversized moustache singing Go Compare.

To the same tune as Over There (The Yanks Are Coming,) if you want to sing along.

That was back in 2009, and since then they’ve gone all post modern and fourth wall breaking. The actor playing the character interviews himself.

There have been adverts about how he really is an opera singer with clips of him singing in concert.

Posters have been put up “vandalised” with a paint spay changing Go Compare to Go Get Some Singing Lessons.

We’ve had twelve years of this ****.

@izzythepush,
That's cruel and unusual punishment. But for some reason now I'm curious.

This is a link to that commercial I voted for worst of all time. Please note the nails sticking up in the deck.

@Frank Apisa,
First time watching. I agree completely. I can't remember how many times I had nails in my feet as a kid due to people just not caring.

Yep.

And that commercial makes me cringe every time it comes on.

@Frank Apisa,
How about the Jimmy Dean sausage commercials?? I'm so sick of hearing that deceased sausage king extolling the virtues of a good breakfast, and how it warms a body up. If that was true, why haven't they rubbed the damn sausage all over him. It's creepy, even the folksy harmonica music ticks me off.
