(P.S. Socialism is not necesarrily dictatorship but it does restrict the people in what they can own, what they can earn, etc. etc. The truly free market, capitalistic countries generally have lower unemployment and a higher standard of living than those employing more socialistic ecnomies. I think once the people start handing over their freedoms to the government, it is all too easy for a dictator to take it from there. Lets encourage capitalisim in Africa first, to encourage productivity, and then they can decide what form of government suits them best.)

Well, we had (and at least until October: still have) a 'socialist'-Grenn government, which was freely elected in a democratic election. (Blair in the UK is on his third term, btw, with his socialist government.)

I admit that we have a rather high unemployment - but I doubt that this is mostly due to our form of government (The UK doesn't have such a problem, although that is due to the fact that here in Germany everyone who doesn't have a work [= from alcoholics over psychiatric ill persons up to those, who could go in pension) are unemployed when registered.)

Looking over other countries with socilistic governments, I can't see that we really have a lower of living than ... well 'capitalistic' governed countries.

But I might be blended and my view narrowed since I've personal knowledge just about twenty or so different countries.

"Just a theory of course. But I think history confirms the validity of it. "

How far back in history do you have to go for an example?

As far back as necessary I think Woiyo. If the principle works now it should work at any point in history.

Walter, I question whether all aspects of Germany or any other European country are truly socialistic. There are definite socialistic aspects to the U.S. government; i.e. inability to opt out of social security, a minimum wage, etc.

But does the government or the employer dictate what a worker can earn in Germany? If you put maximum effort into your work, are you likely to prosper more than will the slacker? Does the government or the manufacturer/distributor set the price for most goods and services? Does the goverment tell the businessman who he can and cannot do business with or can he mostly market his product to just about anybody who is willing to pay for it?

I am certain Germany is more socialistic than we are. But I bet there is a lot of capitalism built into your economy too.

I think if an African worker (or any worker) has no hope or assurance of benefiting from his labor, he is likely to take many naps.

Well, we have since 1949 what is called "the social market economy" - "invented" by the conservatives.

What makes you think that all benefits are financial?

Because under Socialism, there are non-financial benefits that come from working hard, such as Pride or Honor. Perhaps compassion for one's fellow man should be on the list as well.

Well let me know when you find the job that you are willing to do for free Cyclop, especially if you have a family to feed, clothe, house, and educate.
