Well, we had (and at least until October: still have) a 'socialist'-Grenn government, which was freely elected in a democratic election. (Blair in the UK is on his third term, btw, with his socialist government.)
I admit that we have a rather high unemployment - but I doubt that this is mostly due to our form of government (The UK doesn't have such a problem, although that is due to the fact that here in Germany everyone who doesn't have a work [= from alcoholics over psychiatric ill persons up to those, who could go in pension) are unemployed when registered.)
Looking over other countries with socilistic governments, I can't see that we really have a lower of living than ... well 'capitalistic' governed countries.
But I might be blended and my view narrowed since I've personal knowledge just about twenty or so different countries.
