Popular votes don't mean a damn thing in reality.
According to the quoted report,
Clinton swamped Trump in popular vote.
In a United States presidential election, the popular vote is the total number or the percentage of votes cast for a candidate by voters in the 50 states and Washington, D.C.; the candidate who gains the most votes nationwide is said to have won the popular vote.
An electoral system or voting system is a set of rules that determine how elections and referendums are conducted and how their results are determined.
Of course it is possible for the winner of the popular vote to end up losing the election, like it happened in 2016 (and a few times before).
If you would have the popular vote, you wouldn't know who will be the next president and vice-president.
